How Mount Healthy began

The village that became Mount Healthy was established in 1817 as Mount Pleasant. In 1840, nineteen-year-old Robert S. Duncanson, the son of a free Black tradesman, moved there from Michigan to pursue fine art near Cincinnati, which he later called "the Athens of the West"; he went on to become the first African American artist to achieve international recognition, and his 1844 landscape of Mount Healthy hangs today in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. In 1850 the village renamed itself Mount Healthy after a cholera epidemic in which its residents largely survived while people in the surrounding countryside did not. The Main Theatre opened on Hamilton Avenue in 1915 and ran until 1971, and the 1911 Mt. Healthy Public School, designed by architect John F. Sheblessy, served the district until the 1980s. Mount Healthy became a city in 1951 and held 6,996 residents in 2020.

Settled 1817 (as Mount Pleasant), incorporated city, 1951.

Where the name comes from

The village was originally named Mount Pleasant when established in 1817. In 1850, following a cholera epidemic in which the village's own residents survived at a far higher rate than people in the surrounding countryside, it renamed itself Mount Healthy to commemorate that survival.

Before the town

Stories

The Athens of the West, from a young painter's eyes

Robert S. Duncanson was nineteen years old in 1840 when he left his family's home in Monroe, Michigan and moved to Mount Pleasant, the village that would later rename itself Mount Healthy, specifically to be near Cincinnati's art community -- a city he came to call "the Athens of the West." He was the son of a free Black tradesman descended from freed Virginia slaves, and in an era when almost no doors in the American art world opened for Black painters, he found patrons instead among Cincinnati's abolitionists: a Methodist minister named Charles Avery gave him his first major commission in 1848, and the wealthy businessman Nicholas Longworth later paid him to paint eight murals for his mansion. Duncanson became the first African American artist to achieve international recognition, exhibiting in Britain and traveling to Scotland to paint scenes from Sir Walter Scott's poetry. Before any of that, in 1844, still early in his Mount Healthy years, he painted a landscape of the village itself -- a quiet, unpeopled scene that today hangs in the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the earliest surviving record of how the young artist who would go on to paint for presidents and lords first saw the small Ohio village where his career began.

A name earned by surviving

Cholera swept through the Ohio Valley in waves through the mid-19th century, and in 1850 it hit the countryside around Mount Pleasant hard -- while, for reasons no source fully explains, the village itself came through with far fewer losses than its rural neighbors. Whether it was water source, elevation, sanitation, or simple chance, residents took the disparity seriously enough to rename their own town for it, choosing Mount Healthy in place of Mount Pleasant as a permanent, literal claim about the place's fitness to live in. The name has stuck for more than 170 years since, long after the epidemic that inspired it, through the village's growth into a city in 1951 and its steady 20th-century suburban development -- one of a small number of Ohio place names that record not a person, a landscape feature, or a founder's old hometown, but a specific, remembered piece of public health history.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
