How North College Hill began
Revolutionary War veteran Christopher Cary claimed a military land grant here in 1803, and his nephew Robert Cary later bought 27 acres he named Clovernook Farm, building a small frame house in 1814 that was the birthplace of poets Alice (1820) and Phoebe (1824) Cary, and the larger Cary Cottage in 1832, both still standing. William Cary, meanwhile, had bought 491 acres nearby in 1813-14 and built a log-cabin settlement in what was then Mill Creek Township. The Cary sisters left for New York in 1850 and became nationally known poets, praised by Edgar Allan Poe; the family estate later became, in 1903, Ohio's first home for blind women, today the Clovernook Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired, one of the country's largest Braille publishers. The village incorporated in 1916, became a city in 1941, and produced a landmark U.S. Supreme Court case, Tumey v. Ohio (1927), when its own mayor's court was found unconstitutional for paying him per conviction. Population peaked at 12,035 in 1960 and stood at 9,663 in 2020.
Settled 1803 (Christopher Cary's military land grant); 1813-14 (William Cary's 491-acre purchase and log-cabin settlement), incorporated village, 1916; city, 1941.
Where the name comes from
North College Hill is named for its position just north of Cincinnati's College Hill neighborhood (itself formerly called Pleasant Hill), which borders it to the south.
Before the town
No Native village, mound, or documented encounter specific to North College Hill itself was found in the sources consulted; the land was part of John Cleves Symmes's roughly 1-million-acre 1787 purchase.

Stories
Two poets out of a farmhouse
Alice Cary was born in 1814's little three-room Clovernook farmhouse in 1820, and her sister Phoebe four years later, into a family of modest means on a 27-acre farm ten miles north of Cincinnati. Neither had much formal schooling, and Alice later wrote that she taught herself by candlelight after farm chores were done. Their first published poem appeared when Alice was eighteen; by 1838, her poem "The Child of Sorrow" was drawing praise from Edgar Allan Poe, Rufus Wilmot Griswold, and Horace Greeley, an extraordinary reception for a farm girl from a place with no literary reputation at all. The sisters published a joint collection in 1849 and left for New York the following year, where they hosted a literary salon that drew some of the era's best-known writers and built individual careers substantial enough to earn both of them entries in a national anthology of American women poets. Alice died in 1871, not yet 51, but the plain white cottage where the sisters had been born and raised outlived them by more than a century and a half: it survives today as a National Register landmark, and the farm around it, renamed for the Clovernook the sisters made famous in their own writing, went on to a second life sheltering and employing blind Ohioans, work it still does.
The mayor who got paid to convict
In the 1920s, North College Hill ran its Prohibition enforcement through the village mayor's own court, and it built in an incentive nobody today would consider appropriate: the mayor collected $12 for every defendant he personally convicted of a liquor-law violation, on top of his regular pay, with no similar fee if he acquitted. Ed Tumey, convicted under that system for unlawfully possessing liquor, challenged it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, and in 1927 he won unanimously. Chief Justice William Howard Taft, a Cincinnatian himself, wrote the opinion, holding that subjecting a defendant to a judge with "a direct, personal, substantial pecuniary interest in reaching a conclusion against him" violated the constitutional guarantee of due process. Tumey v. Ohio has been cited ever since as a foundational statement of judicial impartiality, a piece of constitutional law that traces directly back to a small Hamilton County village court that paid its own judge by the conviction.

44,377 days of records, 1905-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
