Life story

Victor Mills was born in Milford, Nebraska, in 1897 to a family of farmers and preachers. After Navy service in World War I he worked in Hawaii, where he met Grace Riggs, who urged him to study. He graduated in chemical engineering from the University of Washington in 1926.

He joined Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati and raised his family in Wyoming, Ohio, in the 1930s. He converted Ivory soap from batch to continuous production, cutting a seven-day process to hours.

His best known product is Pampers, the first widely sold disposable diaper. He also worked on cake mix and peanut butter and oversaw Pringles.

P&G named the Victor Mills Society for him. He retired to Tucson in 1961 and died there in 1997 at 100.
