How Lockland began

Lockland was platted in 1829 by proprietors Lewis Howell and Nicholas Longworth (surveyed by Thomas Henderson) and incorporated in 1849, taking its name from the first set of lock gates on the Miami and Erie Canal north of Cincinnati, whose 15-foot change in water level also powered water-driven gristmills and, later, a string of paper mills that became the early village's main industry. Daniel Thompson was Lockland's first mayor; by 1890 the census counted 2,474 residents, and the village held the only bank and newspaper between Cincinnati and Hamilton. The Stearns and Foster mattress and cotton-batting company, founded in Cincinnati in 1846, relocated its operations to Lockland in 1880 and anchored the village's economy for well over a century until the plant closed; a 2004 fire destroyed much of the complex, and its landmark smokestack came down in the final demolition on March 26, 2015. The canal itself stopped operating in 1929, and much of its right-of-way was reused first for the Mill Creek Expressway and Wright-Lockland Highway and later for Interstate 75. In 2024 the village saw a wave of new residents from a refugee resettlement program bringing an estimated 2,000 to 3,500 people from Mauritania, a number sharply reduced in 2025 as roughly 130 were deported following federal immigration enforcement action.

Platted 1829, incorporated 1849, by Platted in 1829 by proprietors Lewis Howell and Nicholas Longworth, surveyed by Thomas Henderson, at the site of the first lock on the Miami and Erie Canal north of Cincinnati; first mayor Daniel Thompson.

Where the name comes from

Lockland takes its name from the first set of lock gates on the Miami and Erie Canal north of Cincinnati, which stood at the site and gave the settlement a 15-foot change in water level that early industry, including a water-powered gristmill and later a cluster of paper mills, put to use.

Before the town

No source found records a Native American village, trail, mound or treaty line specific to the Lockland site itself, in the industrialized lower Mill Creek valley. The 1894 county history does record that Voorhees' Station, one of the fortified pioneer settlements of the 1792 Indian-war period, stood "in the valley of East Mill creek, on the site of Lockland," so the ground had a documented frontier military presence before the canal town was platted.

Timeline

  1. — Voorhees' Station, a fortified pioneer settlement, stands in the valley of East Mill Creek on the site later occupied by Lockland, one of several new stations that sprang up after the mild winter of 1792 let settlers venture beyond Cincinnati.
  2. — Lewis Howell and Nicholas Longworth, as proprietors, have the town platted by surveyor Thomas Henderson at the site of the first Miami and Erie Canal lock north of Cincinnati.
  3. — Pythagoras Holcomb establishes a flour mill on the East Branch of Mill Creek that later becomes part of Lockland's paper-mill industry under F. W. Athearn and successive owners.
  4. — The Stearns and Foster mattress and cotton-batting company is founded in Cincinnati.
  5. — Lockland is officially incorporated as a village, with Daniel Thompson elected the first mayor, John G. Olden the first recorder, and Hiram Palmer the first treasurer.
  6. — Stearns and Foster relocates its operations to Lockland, beginning more than a century as the village's main employer.
  7. — The First National Bank of Lockland opens in November, the only bank between Cincinnati and Hamilton.
  8. — The census counts 2,474 residents; the village has a school building, a town hall, and Presbyterian, Baptist, Methodist and Colored churches, plus paper mills, a lumber company and a flour mill employing well over a hundred operatives combined.
  9. — The Review and News newspaper first appears on July 16, published by the Review Publishing Company under editor Jo Martin.
  10. — The Miami and Erie Canal ceases operation statewide, ending Lockland's role as a canal lock town.
  11. — The National Interstate and Defense Highways Act leads to Interstate 75 being built through the area, reusing portions of the old canal right-of-way.
  12. — Fire destroys major buildings of the former Stearns and Foster factory complex.
  13. — Demolition of the Stearns and Foster complex is completed on March 26, including removal of its landmark smokestack.
  14. — A refugee resettlement program brings an estimated 2,000 to 3,500 new residents from Mauritania to the village.

Stories

A canal lock that named a mill town

Lockland exists because of a fifteen-foot drop in the Miami and Erie Canal: the first lock north of Cincinnati sat exactly here, and the same change in water level that let canal boats pass also turned water-powered gristmills, giving the village both its name and its earliest industry when proprietors Lewis Howell and Nicholas Longworth had it platted in 1829. The canal drop kept powering industry long after the original mill: through the rest of the century a whole cluster of paper mills grew up along the lock, run by families named Athearn, Tangeman, Friend, Fox and Haldeman, so that by 1890 Lockland held "the only bank and newspaper between Cincinnati and Hamilton" and had become, in the words of the county history, more important to local manufacturing than any other point outside the city itself. When the Stearns and Foster mattress company moved its operations from Cincinnati to Lockland in 1880, the village found a second identity as a factory town that would last well over a century, long after the canal itself shut down in 1929 and its towpath became first a local highway and then a stretch of Interstate 75. Stearns and Foster's own end came in pieces: a 2004 fire gutted much of the old complex, and the last landmark smokestack was not brought down until a final demolition on March 26, 2015, closing out a company presence that had outlasted the canal that first drew industry to the site by nearly ninety years.

Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
