How Vienna Township, Trumbull County began

Vienna Township, the only township of its name in Ohio, was pioneered by Connecticut Land Company surveyors who settled there while working: Dennis Clark Palmer, born in 1775, arrived first in 1799 and became the township's first clerk when it formally organized on March 12, 1806, with Isaac Woodford, Isaac Flowers Jr. and William Clinton as its first trustees, elected April 7, 1806. Clock manufacturing was the township's leading industry from 1812 into the 1830s, giving way to coal mining as the dominant trade from 1866 onward. Today the township is home to a small population center, a Veterans War Memorial, and sits near the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport, built just outside its borders in 1939-40.

Settled 1799 (Connecticut Land Company surveyors, including Dennis Clark Palmer), incorporated organized and recognized by the Trumbull County Commissioners March 12, 1806; first township government elected April 7, 1806, by Dennis Clark Palmer (first clerk); Isaac Woodford, Isaac Flowers Jr. and William Clinton (first trustees).

Where the name comes from

The township was originally surveyed and known only as 'Township 4, Range 2' before receiving the name Vienna; no source consulted explains why that name was chosen, but the township remains the only one named Vienna in Ohio.

Before the town

No Native village, camp or treaty event specific to Vienna Township is recorded in the sources we reviewed. The township lies within the wider Mahoning-valley region the county's 1882 history describes as Delaware-occupied hunting ground used seasonally by Seneca and Mingo bands through the 1700s, but no source found names a site inside the township's present boundaries. The Connecticut Land Company surveyors who first settled the township in 1799, including Dennis Clark Palmer, arrived six years before the 1805 Treaty of Fort Industry formally extinguished Native title to the Western Reserve land they were surveying and settling.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware), Seneca, Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga).

Stories

Surveyors who stayed

Vienna Township's earliest residents were not farmers drawn by advertised land but the Connecticut Land Company's own surveying crew, who worked the township in 1799 and, in at least a few cases, simply stayed once the work was done. Dennis Clark Palmer, born in 1775 and only in his early twenties when he arrived, became the township's first settler and, when Vienna formally organized on March 12, 1806, its first clerk as well; fellow surveyors Samuel Hutchins and Isaac Flower had each been paid partly in land, 100 acres apiece, for their survey work, giving them a direct stake in the township before a single furrow was plowed. The township's early economy followed an unusual arc for the Reserve: rather than moving straight from farming to heavy industry, Vienna spent nearly two decades, from 1812 into the 1830s, as a clock-manufacturing center before coal mining took over as the leading trade from 1866 on -- a reminder that not every Mahoning Valley township's industrial story runs straight from agriculture to coal and iron.
