How Girard began
Girard was first settled in 1800 within what became Liberty Township, at a bend of the Mahoning River just north of Youngstown, and took its name from Stephen Girard, the French-American Philadelphia banker and philanthropist who founded Girard Bank and Girard College. The settlement stayed small until canal-era traffic through the Mahoning Valley in the 1840s began drawing industry to the river, and it grew in earnest through the late 1800s and early 1900s as one of the valley's steel towns, its population peaking near 15,000 by 1970. Girard eventually incorporated separately from Liberty Township as its own city and today functions as a Mahoning River suburb between Warren and Youngstown.
Settled 1800.
Where the name comes from
Girard is named for Stephen Girard (1750-1831), the French-born Philadelphia banker and philanthropist who founded Girard Bank and, in his will, endowed Girard College for orphaned boys; no source consulted explains why this particular Mahoning Valley settlement chose to honor a Philadelphia financier who had no direct connection to the town.
Before the town
No Native village, camp or treaty event specific to the Girard town site is recorded in the sources we reviewed. Girard sits on the Mahoning River within the valley the county's 1882 history describes as Delaware-occupied hunting ground used seasonally by Seneca and Mingo bands through the 1700s, but no source found names a town or camp at this specific bend of the river.
Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware), Seneca, Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga).

Stories
Named for a Philadelphia banker who never saw it
Girard's name is one of the odder namings along the Mahoning: Stephen Girard, the French-born Philadelphia financier who founded Girard Bank and left his fortune to endow Girard College for orphaned boys, had no documented connection to the small Ohio river settlement first planted in 1800. What is clearer is what actually built the town: it stayed small for its first four decades, and only began growing once the Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal opened along the Mahoning River corridor around 1840, tying Girard into the same Pittsburgh-to-Cleveland trade route that was building up Warren and Youngstown at the same time. The real growth, though, came later still, as the valley's iron and then steel industry expanded through the late 1800s and into the twentieth century -- Girard's population nearly tripled between 1900 and 1920 alone, and kept climbing until it peaked near 15,000 residents in 1970, the same decade the Mahoning Valley's steel industry as a whole began its long decline.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Girard, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.
49,112 days of records, 1892-05-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
