How Howland Township, Trumbull County began

Howland Township takes its name from the Howland family, descendants of Mayflower passenger John Howland, who purchased the township from the Connecticut Land Company in 1795, a full four years before its first settler arrived in 1799; the township itself was not organized until 1812. It grew slowly as a farming community through the 1800s -- a sawmill in 1814, a gristmill in 1815, and for a few decades around 1830 a health spa at Howland Springs, which burned in 1882 -- and stayed sparsely populated until 1953, when the Clifton-Hyde housing development began pulling it into the growing Warren-Youngstown suburban ring. Today it is one of only two urban townships in Trumbull County, its farmland almost entirely replaced by suburban subdivisions bordering Warren.

Settled 1799 (first settler); township purchased from the Connecticut Land Company in 1795, incorporated organized as a township in 1812, by the Howland family (purchasers); organized 1812.

Where the name comes from

The township is named for the Howland family, who bought the entire township from the Connecticut Land Company in 1795; the family traced its descent from John Howland, a Mayflower passenger who landed at Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1620, more than a century and a half before the family's Ohio purchase.

Before the town

No Native village, camp or treaty event specific to Howland Township is recorded in the sources we reviewed. The township lies within the Mahoning valley the county's 1882 history describes as Delaware-occupied hunting ground used seasonally by Seneca and Mingo bands through the 1700s, but no source found names a town, trail or camp inside the township's present boundaries. The Connecticut Land Company's 1795 sale of the township to the Howland family predates by ten years the 1805 Treaty of Fort Industry that formally extinguished Native title to the land being sold, meaning the purchase itself took place before the United States held clear title to convey.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware), Seneca, Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga).

Stories

Bought by the Howlands before anyone else had seen it

Howland Township has an unusual founding order: the Connecticut Land Company sold the entire township to the Howland family in 1795, a full four years before the first settler is recorded arriving in 1799, and thirteen years before the township organized its own government in 1812. The Howlands themselves descended from John Howland, who had crossed on the Mayflower and landed at Plymouth in 1620 -- so the township's name carries, at two removes, one of the oldest English family names in North America into a stretch of Connecticut Western Reserve land the family never occupied as pioneers so much as purchased and subdivided from a distance, in the pattern common across the Reserve. For most of the nineteenth century the township grew unremarkably: a sawmill in 1814, a gristmill the next year, and by 1830 a small health spa at Howland Springs that drew visitors until it burned in 1882. It stayed essentially rural and sparsely populated for another seventy years after that fire -- the real transformation did not begin until 1953, when the Clifton-Hyde development brought Warren's postwar suburban growth across the township line for the first time.
