How Union Township, Miami County began

Union Township, in the southwestern corner of Miami County, filled after 1801 with Quaker families migrating up from the Carolinas, Georgia and Tennessee, so heavily that the area was known locally as 'Quaker Township.' The Society of Friends organized a monthly meeting there in December 1806. The village of West Milton, first settled about 1805-1807 and named for the poet John Milton, grew up at the township's center and became its commercial hub; the villages of Laura and Potsdam (laid out about 1840 as Georgetown, or New Lebanon) also lie within the township.

Where the name comes from

West Milton was first settled about 1805-1807 by Joseph Evans, a South Carolina native; local tradition credits the name to his daughter's admiration of John Milton's Paradise Lost. A post office was established under the name Milton in 1824 and changed to West Milton in 1829; the village incorporated around 1834.

  4. — A post office was established at the village under the name 'Milton.'
  5. — The post office and village name changed to West Milton.

  7. — Samuel Kelley established a woolen mill in the township; his relative Seth Kelley later built a scythe factory, part of a cluster of grist, carding and woolen mills.

Stories

Quaker Township

Between about 1801 and 1810, families of the Society of Friends moved north out of the Carolinas, Georgia and Tennessee into the township in such numbers that neighbors began calling it 'Quaker Township.' They met first in each other's cabins, including Caleb Mendenhall's, before organizing a formal monthly meeting on December 13, 1806, under the authority of the Red Stone quarterly meeting back in Pennsylvania. The Friends' meeting became the anchor of the township's early religious and social life.
