How West Milton began

West Milton began in 1807 when Joseph Evans laid out Milton on the Stillwater River, in what became Union Township, and held the first sale of lots that year; according to the 1880 county history, his young daughter Rebecca, a reader of Paradise Lost, persuaded him to name it for the poet. The post office opened as Milton in 1824 and was renamed West Milton in 1829. The Stillwater's water power drew woolen mills, a scythe factory and a cotton mill from about 1815, but the village grew slowly, being off the canals and railroads, until a narrow-gauge railroad from Dayton to Covington came about 1880. It incorporated about 1834, grew to 4,697 residents in 2020, and the McKinley School is on the National Register.

Where the name comes from

The 1880 county history says Joseph Evans, who laid out the town and held its first lot sale in 1807, had a young daughter Rebecca who was said to admire Paradise Lost so much that she induced her father to give the village the name of its illustrious author, Milton; the 'West' was added later, when the post office was renamed in 1829.

Before the town

No Native village or site at West Milton is recorded. The 1880 county history says only that the Shawnee leader Tecumseh 'frequently came here to have his guns repaired' (a tradition it relays with 'it is said'), at the mills near Mast's mill by the Stillwater. The land was ceded in 1795.

1. 1807 — Joseph Evans lays out Milton on Section 21 by perennial springs near the Stillwater, with streets crossing at right angles; George Buchanan cries the first sale of lots, which Griffith Mendenhall attends riding on a steer.
2. 1810 — Joseph Evans advertises his store in a Dayton newspaper, the first in the township; Oliver Benton, a New Yorker and son of a Revolutionary soldier, later opens a dry-goods store and serves as postmaster and magistrate.
3. c. 1812 — John Mast has a carding machine in connection with his gristmill by the Stillwater, run alternately with the mill.
4. c. 1815 — Samuel Kelley, a Massachusetts Yankee, builds a woolen mill on Section 21 on the Spring stream; Davis W. Thayer later buys it and adds a power loom.
5. c. 1817 — The first post office is established in the village, with Oliver Benton as postmaster.
6. c. 1819 — Kelley builds a cotton factory on the river bluff above Milton, later converted to a woolen mill; linseed oil is first made here.
7. 1824 — A post office opens under the name Milton.
8. c. 1824 — Seth Kelley builds a scythe factory on the river bank, using the woolen mill's water for his trip-hammer and bellows.
9. 1829 — The post office is renamed West Milton, honoring the English poet John Milton.
10. 1834 — The village incorporates (Wikipedia gives this date as approximate).
11. 1840 — A turnpike is built from Dayton through Milton to Covington, helping the village less than it helped Dayton and Covington.
12. c. 1880 — A narrow-gauge railroad built by Mr. Arnold of Dayton from Dayton through Milton and Covington arrives at last, reviving house-building and trade in a village of about 800 people.
13. 1880 — West Milton has 688 residents in the census.
14. 1950 — Population is 2,101, up from 1,439 in 1940, and reaches 4,697 in 2020.
15. 2005 — The former McKinley School, at 240 S. Main Street, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, on April 22.

A girl who read Paradise Lost

When Joseph Evans laid out his town on the Stillwater in 1807, with its streets crossing at right angles beside perennial springs, the first lot sale was cried by George Buchanan, and the county historian of 1880 says that Griffith Mendenhall, aged fourteen, rode two steers to it, a sight he recalled seeing as something extraordinary even then. Evans's youngest daughter, Rebecca, though young in years, was said to have read Paradise Lost and so admired its author that she induced her father to name the village Milton, after him; only when many years later a post office was established there was the word West added, to tell it from another Milton. For many years the town hardly grew: its founders, Evans, Benton and Samuel Pearce, were for a time its only residents. The historian blames the water power's wasted promise on Dayton and Troy, which drained its grain and pork trade.
