How Laura began
Laura is a village in Union Township, Miami County, laid out about 1840 by Wesley Sharp and Riley McCool, three miles north of Georgetown (now Potsdam), which was laid out the same year. A post office named Laura opened in 1850, and according to the 1909 centennial history the village took the name of the first postmaster's daughter. Union Township had been settled from 1802 by Quakers from the Carolinas, and Friends' meetings, including Lick Branch, two miles southeast of the village, shaped its early life. Laura incorporated in 1892, reached a peak of 526 people in 1960, and had 398 in 2020.
Platted c. 1840, incorporated 1892.
Where the name comes from
Named for Laura, the daughter of the village's first postmaster, when the post office was established in 1850.

Stories
Two villages, three miles apart
Georgetown and Laura were laid out in Union Township about 1840, three miles apart on the western edge of Miami County, close enough to the Darke County line that each drew part of its trade from across it. Georgetown, platted by George Hatfield in Sections 15 and 22, had a large dry-goods trade and a once-thriving business in oak shingles; Laura, laid out by Wesley Sharp and Riley McCool in Section 3 beside the north branch of Ludlow Creek, had the more people, about 200 to Georgetown's 150 in 1880, but less trade. By 1880 Laura had a graded school and two churches, and the county historian noted that it had no saloon because its inhabitants would not tolerate one. Georgetown, also called New Lebanon, kept its post office under the name Potsdam, and became the village of Potsdam.

47,912 days of records, 1893-06-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
