How Concord Township, Miami County began
Concord Township, in central Miami County, was organized around 1807, the same year Miami County itself was formed, and takes in most of the city of Troy in its eastern section. Settlers including Aaron Tullis, William Barbee, John Peck, and Abraham Thomas arrived between 1804 and 1807, several of them veterans of George Rogers Clark's 1780-82 campaigns against Ohio's Native towns. The Great Miami River and the former Miami and Erie Canal both cross the township, and the historic Eldean Covered Bridge (1860) spans the river on the township's boundary with Staunton Township.

Where the name comes from
No source we found states why the township was named Concord; it is one of seven Concord Townships in Ohio, and the name (Latin for "harmony") was a common choice for new townships in the early republic.
Before the town
The 1880 county history of Concord Township records limited direct Native American presence by the time of settlement, but notes that early settler Abraham Thomas had taken part in "both campaigns of G. R. Clarke against the Indians in this vicinity, in 1780-82," placing the township within the wider theater of the Clark campaigns against Ohio Shawnee and Miami towns. It also records that settlers did "considerable trading" with Native people in the area, who exchanged furs and skins for whiskey, sugar, and other goods, implying a continued Native presence in the vicinity into the early 1800s. No named village or site within Concord Township itself is recorded; the wider regional context includes Pickawillany near Piqua.

Stories
A hard second year for the Peck family
John Peck arrived in Concord Township in 1806 with eight children, having bought 160 acres for just $100. The township's 1880 history records that the family's second year on the land was a disaster: nearly all of the stock brought from Kentucky died -- eleven horses along with sheep, hogs, and cattle -- leaving Peck only one mare. Despite the losses, a Baptist congregation later built a log church near the Peck property around 1813-1814, and the family name stayed attached to that stretch of the township for the rest of the century.
The Eldean Covered Bridge
In 1860, builders raised a two-span Long truss bridge across the Great Miami River just north of Troy, on the line between Concord and Staunton townships. At 224 feet, it grew into the longest surviving bridge of its type, carrying traffic on what was then a through road (now a bypassed segment of County Road 33) over the river. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and, after more than 150 years of use, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2016, making it one of the best-preserved 19th-century covered bridges in the country.
