How Troy began

Troy was platted in 1807 as the seat of newly formed Miami County: the commissioners fixed the county seat on forty acres owned by Aaron Tullis, and Andrew Wallace finished his survey of eighty-seven lots on December 16, 1807. Overfield Tavern, built in 1808, is one of Ohio's oldest surviving taverns and is now a museum. The canal reached Troy in 1837, the first Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton train in 1850, and the cornerstone of the present courthouse was laid in 1885. The Hobart Institute of Welding Technology was founded in 1930, and Troy had 26,305 residents in 2020.

Settled 1807, platted 1807.

Where the name comes from

The origin of the name Troy is not recorded. Troy was platted in December 1807 by Andrew Wallace on 40 acres the commissioners chose as the county seat.

Before the town

No known source documents a specific Native American village, trail, or site within present-day Troy itself. The broader Miami County area, including land just north of Troy along the Great Miami River (in Concord Township, where the Eldean Covered Bridge crosses), was Shawnee and Miami territory before the Treaty of Greenville (1795) opened it to settlement.

Nations recorded here: Shawnee, Miami.

Stories

The Broadford War

In 1842 a few Troy men set out to preach temperance in the rural townships, where the farmers did not feel in need of it and drove them off with stale eggs. The speakers swore out warrants and the offenders were jailed in the old brick jail at Troy. Word spread that the country people were gathering to storm the jail, and Sheriff Stephen Johnston called out the militia: Captain Adams's light infantry, Colonel Clarke and Captain Barney's dragoons, Piqua's squadrons and Troy's Lafayette Blues. Some strategist proposed fighting outside the town, and the forces marched to the Broadford bridge and camped for two days and nights, doubling the pickets and sleeping on their arms. Rumors came thick; the mob never did. The county historian of 1909 turned it into mock-heroic verse and credited the sheriff's promptness with keeping blood out of Troy's streets.

Troy against Piqua and Staunton

When Miami County was formed by act of January 16, 1807, ten years after the first white settlers, a court had been meeting at Staunton in the trader Peter Felix's house, and Staunton, Piqua and Troy all wanted the seat of justice. The commissioners were nearly bothered to death by the advocates. Piqua produced a map on which Piqua was the only visible settlement; Troy answered with its own map showing Troy at the county's center and Piqua so remote that contact with the rest would be nearly impossible. In September 1807 the commissioners chose forty acres of Aaron Tullis's land, and Troy's town director, Robert Crawford, collected $24 for selling lots, in what the 1909 historian praised as free of graft. The rivalry with Piqua lasted; the 1909 history says a second 'court house war' was fought many years later by the descendants of the first contenders.

Mostly estimated. Only 4% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Troy - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.

44,511 days of records, 1893-07-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
