How Tipp City began

Tipp City began as Tippecanoe, platted in 1840 by John Clark along the Miami and Erie Canal in what was then Monroe Township. It was named Tippecanoe City for the 1840 Harrison campaign and the Battle of Tippecanoe, where William Henry Harrison earned his nickname. Wikipedia says the original downtown, a stopping place for canal boatmen, purportedly included many bars and a red-light district. The Hyattsville post office was renamed the Tippecanoe City post office on January 28, 1865, and in the 1930s the Postal Service shortened the post office's name to Tipp City to end confusion with Tippecanoe, Ohio. Its downtown forms the Old Tippecanoe Main Street Historic District, and the city had 10,274 residents in 2020.

Settled fall 1839 (foundations of Tippecanoe City laid), platted 1840, by John Clark.

Where the name comes from

Platted by John Clark in 1840 and named Tippecanoe City for the battle where William Henry Harrison earned his nickname 'Tippecanoe'. The 1880 county history says the first-lot buyer wanted the name Jaytown and Clark favored Sharpsburg for his Maryland boyhood home, but during the campaign of 1840 Clark, 'a friend and admirer of Harrison', chose Tippecanoe City, which he intended as a memorial of the battle; the post office was Hyattsville until 1865, and the name was shortened to Tipp City in the 1930s.

Before the town

Before white settlement, a Shawnee village stood in the southeastern part of what became Monroe Township -- the township Tipp City was later platted within -- below the future line of the town, according to the township's 1880 county history. No source ties a named Shawnee town directly to the platted site of Tippecanoe itself.

Timeline

  1. — The foundations of Tippecanoe City are laid in the fall as John Clark acquires the land by exchange with his brother-in-law Robert Evans; the land is low, wet and forested, and Clark stipulates that lots be built on with no log buildings.
  2. — John Clark plats Tippecanoe along the developing Miami and Erie Canal.
  3. — Jaytown, Sharpsburg or Tippecanoe City: the new town takes the name Tippecanoe City, in the Harrison campaign year; the Miami and Erie Canal passes just east of it.
  4. — Uriah Johns builds what is then the most substantial gristmill in Monroe Township, in operation since.
  5. — Charles Shultzbaugh builds the first blacksmith shop on Main Street.
  6. — John Clark builds his brick residence at the east end of Main Street, considered as good as any in the county.
  7. — Mr. Hudson publishes the Tippecanoe City Reflector, the first newspaper, for two years.
  8. — The Hyattsville post office serves the entire community that will become Tippecanoe City.
  9. — On January 28, the Hyattsville post office is renamed the Tippecanoe City post office.
  10. — The Chaffee Block, with an opera house on the third floor seating 600 to 800, is finished at Main and Second streets for about $12,000.
  11. — The Tippecanoe City engine house, with the fire department, mayor's office, town hall and calaboose, is built for $5,000 to $6,000.
  12. — Tippecanoe City has 1,401 residents in the census.
  13. — The Postal Service shortens the post office's name from Tippecanoe City to Tipp City to resolve repeated delivery confusion with Tippecanoe, Ohio.
  14. — Population reaches 4,267 and 10,274 in 2020.
  15. — The Detrick Milling and Distilling Company building (128 W. Broadway) and the Saunders Seed Company building (101 W. Broadway), both in Tipp City, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Stories

A canal town and its Main Street bars

John Clark platted Tippecanoe in 1840 along the developing Miami and Erie Canal. Wikipedia describes the town as a stopping point for boatmen on the canal and says its original downtown purportedly included a large number of bars and a red-light district.

Two names for one post office

For a time the Hyattsville post office served the community. On January 28, 1865, near the end of the Civil War, the Hyattsville post office officially became the Tippecanoe City post office. In the 1930s the Postal Service abbreviated the name to resolve delivery errors with Tippecanoe, Ohio, and around 1938 the name Tipp City appears on postal maps.

What to call the new town

John Clark had come to Monroe Township as a boy of nine from Maryland and in the fall of 1839 swapped farms with his brother-in-law, Robert Evans, who had grown tired of a wet, heavily timbered tract near the canal. Clark laid it out in the year of Harrison's presidential campaign, and the new village needed a name. According to the 1880 county history, the man who bought the first lot wanted it called Jaytown to preserve his own name, while Clark favored Sharpsburg after his old home in Maryland. But it was 1840, and Clark, who was a friend and admirer of Harrison, decided on Tippecanoe City, for the battlefield where Harrison had broken the Indians in 1811. Clark also insisted that no log buildings be put up on the lots, and the early town became known for neat frame and brick houses. The first store was opened by Mr. Jay in the fall of 1840 in goods he exchanged for produce.

48,405 days of records, 1893-06-02 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
