How Bethel Township, Miami County began
Bethel Township, in the southeastern corner of Miami County, was part of the older Elizabeth territory until 1807, when the county commissioners made it one of the county's five original townships. Its first settler, Thomas Stockstill, arrived in 1796 or 1797 after leaving his wealthy, slaveholding family in Tennessee in opposition to slavery. The township filled with Quaker-adjacent and Pennsylvania-German farm families through the early 1800s, grew mills, distilleries and churches around Brandt and Phoneton, and is remembered locally as the ancestral ground of the Wright family. Part of Tipp City (platted as Tippecanoe City) lies in the township's northeast corner.

Before the town
No village, mound or treaty site specific to Bethel Township is recorded. The 1880 county history notes only general 'Indian hostilities' during the War of 1812 period and an attack in which a settler's daughter named Hacker was shot and scalped but survived, and it says early settlers could point to spots on their farms 'where at one time were pitched the tents of the red men' without naming a nation or village. The 1795 Treaty of Greenville line runs through the county, and the Shawnee, Miami and Wyandot were present along the Great Miami and Stillwater valleys generally.

Stories
The slaveholder's son who walked away
Thomas Stockstill, the township's first settler, reached Bethel Township around 1796 or 1797 after walking away, at sixteen, from his wealthy father's slaveholding household in Tennessee because he could no longer bear how the enslaved people there were treated. He arrived, in the words of the county's 1880 historian, with nothing but 'the clothes he wore, one broadax, three chisels.' He married Catherine Hain and built the township's earliest cabin in its northeast corner. From that beginning, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland and Carolina families followed through the early 1800s, among them the Studebaker brothers from Maryland, and the ancestors of Wilbur and Orville Wright.
From farmland to invention
The Wright brothers, who built and flew the first powered airplane, descended from families who had settled in the township. That achievement happened elsewhere, but local histories preserve the connection as a point of local pride.
