Deep dives about Holland

How Holland began

Holland grew up near the center of Springfield Township where the Erie and Kalamazoo line (later the Lake Shore and the New York Central) crossed the old road west from Toledo. Robert Clark filed the plat north of the railroad on March 14, 1863, and Hall's first and second subdivisions made up the part south of it; the place had earlier been called Drakes and then Hardy, and the most-told explanation of 'Holland' is a clerk's rendering of Franklin Hall's 'Hall Land.' The post office came to the village from James Dean's hotel on the Toledo Plank Road three miles west, and by 1887 Holland had three stores, a brick Free Methodist church built in 1870, a school, a blacksmith shop and a hotel. It had 230 residents in 1880.

Platted north of the railroad by Robert Clark, plat filed March 14, 1863; south of it, Hall's first and second subdivisions, by Robert Clark and Franklin Hall.

Where the name comes from

Before it was Holland the settlement was called Drakes, then Hardy (likely for Samuel Hardy, a Continental Congress member and Virginia lieutenant governor). The most-repeated account of the current name holds that developer Franklin Hall asked that his plat be recorded as 'Hall Land' and a clerk's error turned it into 'Holland'; a competing theory credits 1850s drainage ditches resembling Dutch canals, though early settlement records show mostly New England and New York families rather than Dutch ones, which sources cite as evidence against that version. Waggoner's 1888 history confirms that the village 'was originally called Hardy' before the name was changed to Holland.

Before the town

No Native village, camp or treaty event specific to the Holland town site is recorded in Waggoner (1888), Killits (1923) or the other sources we reviewed. The surrounding Springfield Township was drawn partly from Township No. 2 of the Twelve Mile Square Reserve ceded at Greenville in 1795.

Timeline

  1. — The first train runs between Toledo and Chicago on the line that will later serve Holland.
  2. — Erie and Kalamazoo Railroad records show an unnamed station at the future Holland handling freight and passenger traffic.
  3. — Robert Clark develops land north of the railroad while Franklin Hall builds houses south of it, the two halves that grow into Holland.
  4. — Robert Clark files the plat of the village north of the railroad.
  5. — Before Holland is laid out, mail comes by stage to a post office kept by James Dean at his hotel on the Toledo Plank Road, three miles west of the later village; Robert Clark and then Thomas Wood keep the office after him.
  6. — The Free Methodist church, a brick building, is erected at Holland; Rev. L. T. Fink, the first minister of that church in the area, holds a revival there.
  7. — Holland's population reaches 230, with freight tonnage nearly twenty times and passenger traffic about four times its 1860 levels.
  8. — A local union of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union is organized at Holland with Mrs. S. A. Hovey as president.
  9. — Holland has three stores (Harrison Wood, Milan Perkins, and T. W. Sage & Co., agricultural implements), a Free Methodist church, a schoolhouse, a blacksmith shop and a hotel.
  10. — The Springfield Township School in Holland is photographed with its students, including Myra Hovey, the only student individually identified in the surviving print.
  11. — Holland is a station on the New York Central Railroad and the Toledo & Indiana Electric Railway, with several general stores and telephone connection to Toledo.

Stories

A clerk's typo, or so the story goes

By the time Franklin Hall platted his half of what became Holland, the settlement had already carried two names, Drakes and then Hardy. Hall, developing land south of the railroad while Robert Clark laid out the ground to the north, is said to have wanted his plat recorded as 'Hall Land,' and what reached the record books was 'Holland.' A rival account credits 1850s drainage ditches that reminded someone of Dutch canals, but the early settlers were mostly from New England and New York, which sources cite against it. Waggoner's 1888 history, written while the change was within memory, records only that the village was 'originally called Hardy' and gives no reason for the new name.

Merchants of the new rail village

Two of Holland's early merchants came out of the township's pioneer families. Harrison Wood arrived in Springfield from Orleans County, New York, in 1835 with his parents, Thomas and Matilda Wood; he served in Company A of the 14th Ohio Infantry, was wounded at Tullahoma, Tennessee, and afterward kept a store at Holland and served as township clerk. Thomas W. Sage, son of Dennis Sage, the township's first settler, ran an agricultural implement store in the village. The Methodists of the neighborhood had first met at Thomas Wood's tavern and then in the 'Red School House,' and Thomas Wood raised the subscription for their church, dedicated in 1859 a mile southwest of Holland. In 1887 the village had three stores, those of Harrison Wood, Milan Perkins and T. W. Sage & Co.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
