How Swanton Township, Lucas County began
Swanton Township in western Lucas County was first known as Wing Township, for settler Chandler L. Wing, who built the area's first house on the west bank of Swan Creek in the spring of 1834; it took its present name in 1851, with the first election under it held April 7. Ottawa villages lined Swan Creek through the 1830s, among them the band of Chief Ottokee, who by local tradition was a relative of Pontiac and Wauseon's half brother and who stayed in the Maumee valley trading peacefully with settlers long after most other Ottawa families had been pushed west. Malaria from the creek's poor drainage slowed the township's growth for decades, relieved only by drainage work completed in 1881; today Swanton is the only township of that name in Ohio.
Settled spring 1834, when Chandler L. Wing built the township's first house on Swan Creek's west bank, incorporated organized as Wing Township in the 1830s; renamed Swanton Township in 1851, first election under the new name April 7, 1851, by Chandler L. Wing (first settlement); township organizers (name change).
Where the name comes from
The township was first called Wing Township, after early settler Chandler L. Wing, and carried that name from its 1830s organization until 1851, when it was renamed Swanton Township; no source we consulted explains the origin of 'Swanton' itself.
Before the town
Ottawa (Odawa) villages occupied land along Swan Creek within the township through the 1830s; the 1888 Lucas County history records that beginning in the summer of 1837, Chief Ottokee and his band occupied the north half of the southeast quarter of Section 5, hunting and trading venison and other goods with the new settlers. Swanton Township's own history and other regional sources describe Ottokee as a half brother of Chief Wauseon (for whom the Fulton County seat is named) and, per the township's account only, a descendant of Pontiac -- a claim we could not corroborate; the Wikipedia biography of Ottokee confirms the Wauseon relationship but does not mention Pontiac. Ottokee stayed in the Maumee valley after most other Ottawa families were forced west under the 1830s removal treaties; regional sources place the final departure of the last South Maumee River Ottawa band, under Ottokee's own leadership, in 1839.

Stories
The chief who stayed to trade
By the time Chandler Wing built his log house on Swan Creek in 1834, the federal removal treaties had already pushed most of the Maumee valley's Ottawa families toward Kansas. Chief Ottokee did not go, at least not yet. From the summer of 1837 his band held ground in the township's Section 5, along the same creek the new settlers were building their bridges and mills on, and the 1888 county history remembers him trading venison hams to arriving farm families for a quarter apiece -- an image of two communities working out a practical, if lopsided, coexistence in the years just before the final Ottawa departure. Regional sources place that departure, the last South Maumee River band's, in 1839, with Ottokee reportedly leading it out himself; other accounts of his life, including the one behind the Fulton County village that still carries his name, remember him instead as the last Ottawa leader to formally plead, unsuccessfully, for his people to be allowed to stay on their land at all. Both pictures of the same man -- a practical trader and a leader making a last, failed appeal -- likely describe different moments of the same hard decade.
