How Canton Township, Stark County began
Canton Township is the first-settled township in Stark County and the only Canton Township in Ohio. In March 1805 the Steubenville land-office surveyor James F. Leonard and the Barber brothers set up a station northeast of the future city, on the Reed farm, and Bezaleel Wells's surveyors Butler Wells and Daniel McClure set up a second near the Large Spring, now Meyers Lake; Leonard platted Canton that autumn. Philip Slusser built the county's first mill for grinding wheat east of town and David Bechtel settled in 1807 on land with an Indian burying ground or mound. By 1833 the township had five gristmills, nine sawmills, six tanneries and a blast furnace. It surrounds much of the city of Canton, and held 12,477 residents outside the city in 2020, with the communities of North Industry and Waco.

Where the name comes from

Before the town
Perrin's 1881 county history records that David Bechtel, who settled in 1807, had an Indian burying ground or mound on his farm in Section 11, where arrowheads and stone and iron implements were found; it says Native people were still quite numerous in his neighborhood, and an encampment of Indians stood near Leonard's station in 1805. The history does not name their nation. The land was ceded by the Treaty of Greenville (1795).

Timeline
- — Bezaleel Wells plats Canton within what becomes Canton Township, the county's first permanent American settlement.
- — In March James F. Leonard, a surveyor from the Steubenville land office, and James and Henry Barber set up a station just northeast of the future Canton on the Reed farm, the first settlement in the township and the county; on October 5 James Culbertson dies there, the first white death in the county.
- — Butler Wells and Daniel McClure, surveyors from Steubenville, set up a second station for Bezaleel Wells on his land about two miles northwest of Canton near the Large Spring, later called Meyers Lake for Andrew Meyers, who afterward owned the land around it.

Stories
A blast furnace in the township that shares the county seat's name
By 1833 Canton Township was described as having five gristmills, nine sawmills, four fulling mills, six tanneries, nineteen stores, an oil mill and a blast furnace. A small area at the township's northwest corner remains outside the city of Canton and holds part of the village of Meyers Lake.
A stranger's $338 in silver
Perrin's county history tells a story it heard from James F. Leonard about the spring of 1805. A stranger from the East came to Leonard's station while Leonard was away at the Steubenville land office, and on Saturday the Barber brothers and Culbertson agreed to show him land on the Sunday. He had $338 in silver in a heavy cloth sack, along with his bread and meat, and to keep it safe he hid the sack in the trunk of a hollow tree and covered the hole with moss. Back at the station that evening he left it there for the night, and on Monday morning sack, money and food were gone. With an Indian encampment nearby he blamed the Indians, had no way to prove it, and started home with a heavy heart. He met Leonard on the road, who told him he thought wolves, not Indians, had done it. Four months later three Pennsylvanians looking over land half a mile from the tree found a piece of the ticking sack, the story was told, and a search turned up nearly all the silver where the wolves had dropped it among the leaves.
Elizabeth Harter's trip to the mill
Philip Slusser, who came from Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, in 1805 and built the first mill in Stark County for grinding wheat, drew customers from Plain Township to the north, and Perrin records the trip of Elizabeth Harter, fifteen, daughter of George Harter. She was sent with five and a half bushels of wheat, three bushels in one bag and the rest in another, riding one horse and leading the other. She was kept at the mill until late afternoon, and the path through the woods was fading in the dusk when the overhanging boughs swept the flour sack off the led horse. She got it onto her shoulder but could not heave it over the horse, and had nearly given up and decided to go back to Canton for the night when an old settler, Frederick Rodacker, came by and threw the sack on for her. He took her home with him for the night, while her mother blew a horn for half the night to guide her. Elizabeth Harter lived to be Mrs. Baer, then Mrs. Grubb, and Perrin met her in a green old age with a good memory of those years.
