How Providence Township, Lucas County began
Providence Township takes its name from the vanished canal town of Providence, founded around 1816 as a fur-trading post by a settler recorded variously as Peter Manor and Peter Minor, and formally platted in 1835 -- eighty lots and five streets -- just north of a lock on the Maumee and Erie Canal at the foot of the rapids. The township organized in 1836, the same year Lucas County itself was created, with its first election held at the founder's own house; the village of Providence boomed briefly on canal traffic before an 1846 fire and an 1854 cholera epidemic, arriving with river travelers, emptied it so fast that survivors left possessions behind rather than linger. The mill the town's last miller built, the Isaac R. Ludwig Mill, still stands and operates today inside Providence Metropark, alongside a restored canal lock, on the site of the township's only Providence in the state of Ohio.
Settled the village of Providence founded around 1816 as a fur-trading post, platted 1835, eighty lots and five streets, north of the Maumee River canal lock, incorporated township organized 1836; first election July 30, 1836 at the founder's house, by Peter Manor / Peter Minor (spelling varies by source).
Where the name comes from
Providence Township and the vanished village at its center take their name from Providence, and Wikipedia's account of the village adds that some early settlers were drawn from Providence, Rhode Island, though no source we consulted confirms that connection as the deciding reason for the choice rather than a general appeal to the word's meaning.
Before the town
No Native village, camp or treaty event specific to Providence Township's own boundaries is documented in the sources reviewed; the township sits within the broad Maumee valley corridor that the Odawa (Ottawa), Wyandot and other nations used before the 1817 Treaty of Fort Meigs cession, and just downriver from the Nawash-Kinjoano Reservation near Waterville.
Timeline
- — A fur trading post is established at the site that becomes the village of Providence, on the Maumee's north bank at the foot of the rapids.
- — The village of Providence is formally platted -- eighty lots and five streets -- just north of a Maumee and Erie Canal lock.
- — Providence Township holds its first election at the founder's house, the year the township joins the newly formed Lucas County.
- — A fire destroys most of the village of Providence's wooden central business district.
- — A cholera epidemic, brought by river travelers and spread by contaminated water, empties Providence so quickly that survivors leave most of their possessions behind; combined with the fire and the rise of railroads over canals, the village never recovers.
- — Neapolis, in the township's northwest, is platted as the Wabash, St. Louis and Pacific Railway is built through the township.
- — Lucas County officially removes Providence from its records.
- — The Isaac R. Ludwig Historical Mill, in Providence Metropark on the old village site, is added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Stories
A canal town that ran out of luck twice
Providence had every advantage a river town could want in the 1830s: a lock on the new Miami and Erie Canal, a favorable site at the foot of the Maumee rapids, and enough demand that stores, hotels and warehouses went up almost as fast as settlers arrived to fill them. It survived barely two decades before losing everything. In 1846 a fire tore through the wooden buildings crowding its center; the village was still rebuilding when, in 1854, river travelers brought cholera, and the water that had made Providence a trading hub carried the disease through the whole community. Survivors left so fast, according to the township's own history, that many simply abandoned their possessions rather than linger. The rise of the railroads finished what fire and disease had started, and what remained of the village drifted inland, away from the canal that had made it and then helped kill it. The formal end came slowly: Lucas County did not strike Providence from its records until 1928, nearly seventy-five years after the town had, in practice, already emptied out.
