How Miltonsburg began

Miltonsburg was organized in 1836 by David Pierson of Woodsfield in Malaga Township, and named for Pierson's son Milton -- the same Pierson family that gave nearby Clarington its name, after a daughter, Clarinda. Sitting on a high, coal- and limestone-bearing ridge, the village peaked at 176 residents in 1870 and declined through the twentieth century to just 29 by 2000, before a modest recovery to 42 by 2020.

Where the name comes from

Miltonsburg was named for Milton, the son of its founder, David Pierson of Woodsfield.

The surrounding Malaga Township ridge country lay within the broader hunting and travel range of the Wyandot, Shawnee, Lenape (Delaware) and Mingo peoples before the Treaty of Greenville (1795), but no named site is tied to the village.

Stories

The Germans around Miltonsburg

David Pierson of Woodsfield organized Miltonsburg in 1836 on the high ridge of Malaga Township and named it for his son Milton. The 1882 county history notes that Laurenz Schaub and John J. Dorr were among the large German population who were first to settle around the new village. A Roman Catholic church was built just south of Miltonsburg in 1835 or 1836; it was demolished and a larger Catholic church put up on the north side of the village, and by 1880 Methodist Episcopal and Evangelical churches also stood there. The township around it was organized December 15, 1820, and Miltonsburg itself counted 152 people in 1880. The village reached its census peak of 176 in 1870 and by 2000 had fallen to 29.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
