How Lake Township, Wood County began

Lake Township was organized in 1844 in the drained swampland of northern Wood County, and grew as a farming and later suburban township holding the villages of Millbury and Walbridge along with Toledo Executive Airport. On the night of June 5, 2010, an EF4 tornado tore an 8.8-mile path through the township, killing seven people and destroying Lake High School and the township's own administration and police buildings just hours before a scheduled graduation ceremony. The township has since rebuilt, and its schools carry the tornado's memory in the 'Flyers' nickname tied to the neighboring airfield.

Incorporated township established June 3, 1844, coterminous with Congressional Township 7 North, Range 12 East; first election ordered held at John Shinabarger's house, June 15, 1844, by Wood County commissioners.

Where the name comes from

The origin of the name 'Lake Township' was not found in the sources we consulted;

Before the town

The corner of a 34-square-mile Ottawa reservation, called Tushquegon or McCarty's village and granted to Ottawa chiefs by the September 1817 Treaty of the Maumee Rapids, projected into Sections 1, 2, 3 and 10 of Lake Township, per the county's own 1897 history and its township maps -- one of the very few places in Wood County with a documented Native land claim. The 1897 chapter on Lake Township itself records no village, mound or burial in the township.

Stories

The night before graduation

At about 11:20 p.m. on June 5, 2010, an EF4 tornado with winds estimated near 175 mph touched down and carved an 8.8-mile path through Lake Township, staying on the ground for fourteen minutes. It killed seven people, injured at least 28 more, and destroyed at least 60 houses along with several hundred more damaged; cars and school buses were picked up and thrown, trees were stripped of bark, and large airplane hangars at the nearby airfield were leveled. Lake High School, the township's administration building and its police station were all destroyed -- the high school demolished only about twelve hours before students were due to walk across its stage for graduation. Total damage in the storm's path was later put at roughly $102.4 million. The township rebuilt its schools and offices in the years that followed, and Lake Local Schools' athletic teams, nicknamed the Flyers for their location across from the airport, carry a name that today also evokes a community that came back from one of the deadliest tornadoes in modern Ohio history.

The stave factory explosion at Cummings

Cummings was a sawmill settlement a mile east of Moline, named in 1880 when Giddings and Cummings built their mills in the forest; F. S. Giddings was its postmaster, merchant and the sawmill operator. On July 29, 1891, an explosion tore through the stave factory there. Charles Moore and Frank Miller were killed instantly, and two more men, Zigler and Enz, died of their injuries later. When the nearby Hobart post office was discontinued in November 1895, its government property was moved to the Cummings office. The 1897 county history gives these facts without naming the cause.
