How Perrysburg Township, Wood County began

Perrysburg Township grew out of Waynesfield, the sprawling original township that in 1820 covered most of the newly organized Wood County before being broken up into smaller units named for their towns. It holds Fort Meigs and the city of Perrysburg, Wood County's first seat of government, along with rural land along the Maumee River and U.S. Route 20 that stayed in farms and later suburban development after the county seat moved to Bowling Green in 1870. Today the township surrounds, but is legally separate from, the city of Perrysburg.

Settled 1810 (Amos Spafford and family, within what became the township), platted township set off from the earlier Waynesfield township as Wood County's population grew, incorporated township established May 8, 1823, when commissioners set apart all of Waynesfield's original territory under the new name, with the first election ordered at Samuel Spafford's house, June 19, 1823, by Wood County commissioners.

Where the name comes from

The township takes its name from Perrysburg, itself named for Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, hero of the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie.

Before the town

Perrysburg Township contains the twelve-mile-square reserve at the Rapids of the Maumee that the Treaty of Greenville (1795) set aside for the United States, decades before the rest of Wood County was ceded in 1817. No mound, earthwork or named Native village specific to the township outside the city of Perrysburg was found in the sources consulted.

Nations recorded here: Wyandot, Shawnee, Ottawa.

Timeline

  1. — About twenty French families, driven from their Maumee-area settlement by the outbreak of British and Native hostilities, travel by one-horse sleigh train over frozen Maumee Bay to Lower Sandusky under the guidance of former Indian trader Peter Maltosh, reaching safety in three days.
  2. — Wood County is organized with most of its territory in the single vast township of Waynesfield, which Perrysburg Township is later set off from.
  3. — The first township election for justices of the peace at Perrysburg is held at the house of Samuel Spafford, after the Court of Common Pleas reduces Waynesfield township's outsized jurisdiction and authorizes new elections.
  4. — The commissioners formally set apart all of Waynesfield's original territory within organized Wood County under the new name Perrysburg Township, with the first election ordered held at Samuel Spafford's house on June 19, 1823.
  5. — Perrysburg becomes the seat of Wood County government, anchoring the township's early growth.
  6. — The county seat moves to Bowling Green, ending Perrysburg Township's status as the county's administrative center.
  7. — The Edwin H. Simmons House southeast of Perrysburg is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Stories

A colony fleeing the Maumee on ice

French settlers had lived along the Maumee near the Rapids since coming from Monroe, Michigan, settling into farming and trade. When British and Native hostilities broke out in 1812, their safety collapsed, and in January 1813 the government directed about twenty families to pack what they could and leave for Lower Sandusky. Heavy ice on Maumee Bay, thickly covered with snow, turned out to be their good fortune: it gave them a clear path away from danger and let them avoid enemy raiders in the forest. Under the direction of Peter Maltosh, a Frenchman who had worked as an Indian trader, the families formed a train of one-horse sleighs with board runners and made the journey in three days -- one day to Locust Point, one more to Port Clinton, and a third into Lower Sandusky, where the government housed them in military barracks through the winter. That August they were moved again, this time to Upper Sandusky, and stayed wards of the government until the war ended, with the able-bodied men serving in the ranks. Some families, including Cavaliers, Momenys, De La Points and the five Devoir brothers, eventually returned to rebuild along the Maumee once peace came in 1815 -- refugees twice over from the same stretch of river that became Perrysburg Township.

One township becomes many

When Wood County organized in 1820, nearly all of its enormous, mostly unsettled territory was folded into a single township named Waynesfield, whose jurisdiction the county's own historian called 'colossal.' As settlement grew along the Maumee, the county court began carving out smaller, more manageable townships named for their towns -- Perrysburg among the first -- and cutting back the number of justices of the peace Waynesfield was allotted accordingly. The reorganization is a reminder that a modern township boundary here is not a natural or ancient line but a bureaucratic convenience settled term by term, as the swamp filled with enough people to need it.
