How Clay Township, Ottawa County began
Clay Township, named for Henry Clay, occupies the southwestern corner of Ottawa County around the village of Genoa. Timothy and Cinderella Sherman are recorded as its first settlers of European descent in 1835, but the swampy, timbered township had only 176 residents in 1840; the Toledo, Norwalk and Cleveland railroad, opened through Stony Ridge (renamed Genoa in 1856) in 1852, brought sawmills, lime kilns and settlers, and the township had 3,616 residents by 1880. Until 1888 it also took in the present Allen Township to the north.

Named for Henry Clay, the Kentucky statesman and three-time presidential candidate; the township is one of nine Clay Townships in Ohio.

Stories
Sawing the township down
George M. Rudes, born in Genesee County, New York, in 1827, came to Clay Township after keeping a hotel and farming in Huron County. He bought eighty acres of timber and a sawmill and for twelve years cut the forest on his own and neighboring land, often standing knee-deep in water while felling trees. His 1896 biography says part of the lumber went into the 'Middle Ground' in Toledo. As the timber came off he improved the farm he called Maple Grove, and by the 1890s the woods that had covered the township were fields.
