How Troy Township, Wood County began
Troy Township was established December 1, 1834, one of three townships (with Montgomery and Freedom) the Wood County commissioners organized on the same day as settlement pushed into the northeastern part of the drained county. It holds the village of Luckey in its southwestern section and the unincorporated communities of Lemoyne and Stony Ridge, the latter home to the Empire House, a historic building on U.S. Route 20 listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Settled 1833, by immigrants moving west toward the Maumee along the Western Reserve road, incorporated township established December 1, 1834, by Wood County commissioners.
Where the name comes from
The origin of the name 'Troy' for this township was not found in the sources consulted; Ohio has seven townships of this name statewide, a common pattern of borrowing classical and eastern-U.S. place names for new Ohio townships in the early 19th century.
Before the town
No mound, earthwork or named Native village specific to Troy Township was found in any source consulted; the county's own 1897 history states that no such evidence exists anywhere in Wood County.

Timeline
- — The township's exterior lines are surveyed by Charles Roberts.
- — A "mud pike" is built from Lower Sandusky to Perrysburg, 31 miles, along the Western Reserve road through the Black Swamp; mail coaches begin running in 1827 and extend to Detroit in 1830.
- — The township's first settlers arrive, immigrants who had traveled west along the Western Reserve road and decided they had gone far enough.
- — Mrs. William Gorrill, newly arrived, starts a school in her cabin, the first in the township.
- — Troy Township (Congressional Township 6, Range 12) is established by the Wood County commissioners, with its first polling place at Thomas Learning's house, the same day Montgomery and Freedom townships are also organized.
- — The first township election is held at Thomas Learning's house, as ordered at establishment.
- — David Phenicie and Daniel H. Cole are elected the first justices of the peace; fifteen electors vote.
- — Neil, Moore and Co. put coaches on the Reserve road, and in 1837 a Maumee Express poet laments the mud: "no more the coach can go -- a lumber wagon takes the road".
- — Clerk D. H. Cole counts 33 children of school age in District No. 2; the schoolhouse is worth $25 and the teacher is paid $72.50 a year.
- — The census counts 383 residents; 1,057 in 1870; 1,803 in 1890.
- — Father Rappe forms a Catholic congregation and a German Methodist society is organized at Woodville, the church center for Troy settlers; a Lutheran class had formed there in 1840.
- — Sections 19, 20, 29, 30, 31 and 32 are detached from Troy Township and attached to the newly created Webster Township.
- — John Elderkin builds the Empire House on the hill southeast of Stony Ridge.
- — Cholera strikes Troy Township in two separate outbreaks, killing Fred, Julia and William Rolfes, Philip Hartman and James La Farree among others in 1852, and one or two members of nearly every family in 1854.
- — Eliza Mary Winter is clerk of the board of education, evidence that women took part in school affairs early.
- — Trustees of the Troy German Evangelical Lutheran Church buy land in Section 25 from George Joseph and begin building.
- — Stony Ridge is surveyed for Caleb Bean and Samuel Shriner by George Kirk.
- — Luckey is surveyed in April for Isaac W. Krotzer by George Kirk, on ground the county history calls peculiarly suited to a town site between the railroad and a feeder of the Toussaint.
- — A fire destroys two blocks on the north side of Main Street in Luckey, from Charles to Walnut; a row of brick stores replaces them by the winter.
- — The Empire House, on U.S. Route 20 east of Stony Ridge, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
- — The census finds 4,097 people in the township.
Stories
Two cholera summers
Troy Township, like much of Ohio, was struck twice by cholera epidemics in the 1850s. In 1852 the disease took Fred, Julia and William Rolfes, Philip Hartman, James La Farree and others -- an entire cluster of a single pioneer family among the dead. It returned in 1854, when the county's own history records that one or two members of nearly every family in the township fell ill and died. The losses were recorded matter-of-factly, without embellishment, in a county history that otherwise dwelt on land buyers and mill construction -- a reminder of how ordinary sudden epidemic death was to rural Ohio households only a generation or two before modern sanitation and medicine changed that.
The mud pike and the mud-hole owners
The Western Reserve road across Troy was in 1825 a "mud pike" built from Lower Sandusky to Perrysburg, thirty-one miles through the Black Swamp, and for thousands of westbound settlers it was the direct way. Mail coaches began running in 1827 and reached Detroit by 1830. The 1897 county history records what settlers remembered: mud holes were created for revenue, yokes of oxen were kept ready to pull out teams, and the mud hole beside each tavern was the perquisite of the nearest tavern keeper. One mud-hole owner, tired of the business, was said to have sold his interest to a neighbor for $5, hoping thereby to escape the curses of the immigrants he had delayed. In 1837 a poet in the Maumee Express mourned the coaches of Neil, Moore and Company, 'deep-stalled in endless mud'. Ten years after the road was finished the railroad came and took most of its travelers. Elder's Tavern, owned by Russell in 1835, was the only frame house on the old Reserve road.
The preacher who took the wrong pulpit
Andrew Hays, a local Methodist preacher since 1844 who officiated at more marriages and funerals than perhaps anyone in the county, was told to fill an appointment for a brother minister somewhere in northern Troy Township. On a bright Sabbath he rode along thinking over his sermon, came upon a church with people gathering and, as it was about the place and the hour, hitched his horse, walked in, and took the pulpit. He gave out the opening hymn, which the congregation sang, offered prayer, and the congregation sang a second time. As he was about to announce his text a gentleman stepped up, laid a hand on his shoulder and said, 'My good brother, it may be your sing and pray, but it is my preach.' Hays then learned he had another four miles to ride; he arrived long after the waiting congregation had gone home. The story is told in the 1897 history on the authority of Mrs. Carter.
