How Allen Township, Ottawa County began
Allen Township occupies the northwestern corner of Ottawa County. Until 1888 it was the northern half of a larger Clay Township; Clay Center, founded by land speculator William Clark at the geographic center of that township, went to Allen when the two split, a division local tradition ties to Genoa winning the joint town hall in 1883. Settlement came late, in heavy timber: German immigrants such as Anton Young arrived in the 1850s, and charcoal burners, sawmills and farms cleared the land around Williston and Curtice. The township had 3,773 residents in 2020.
Settled 1850s (land then part of Clay Township), incorporated 1888-07-09 (set off from Clay Township).
Where the name comes from
Not confirmed for this township. Ohio has several Allen Townships; the name is often given for Colonel John Allen, killed at the 1813 Battle of Frenchtown, but no source consulted says so for this one, which was created in 1888.
Before the town
No source found documents a Native village, trail, mound, or other specific site within Allen Township's boundary. The township's western part lay within the Great Black Swamp, the wet forest that covered much of northwest Ohio and was a barrier to both Native and settler habitation alike until it was cleared and drained in the nineteenth century; the 1805 and 1807 treaties opened the region to settlement.

Stories
Charcoal at Williston
Reuben M. Babcock, born in Columbia County, New York, in 1820, had been a teacher, carpenter and stave maker before he began burning charcoal in Monroe County, Michigan. After twenty-one years there he came to Ottawa County, built four kilns at Martin in Clay Township, and a year later moved to Williston in what is now Allen Township, where he built six more. He bought 160 acres of timberland near Williston and turned the timber he cleared into charcoal, then farmed the cleared ground. In the 1890s Allen Township was still being cleared in this way, a farm at a time, from woods that had covered it when the first German families arrived in the 1850s.
