How Perrysburg began
Perrysburg grew up beside Fort Meigs, the War of 1812 fortification General William Henry Harrison ordered built on the south bank of the Maumee Rapids in February 1813 to withstand two British and Native sieges that year. Surveyed and platted in 1816 and named for Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, hero of the Battle of Lake Erie, it served as Wood County's first organized seat of government from 1822 until an 1866-1870 fight moved the courthouse to Bowling Green. A cholera epidemic nearly emptied the town in 1854 and the 1859 railroad reconnected it to wider trade; today Perrysburg is a Toledo-area suburb that has rebuilt and preserved the Fort Meigs earthworks as a state historic site.
Settled 1810 (Amos Spafford and family), platted surveyed and platted summer 1816 by a federal survey team under Josiah Meigs, Surveyor General, led by Alexander Bourne, incorporated county seat from 1822; village/town incorporation details not found in sources consulted, by federal survey; town proprietors.
Where the name comes from
Perrysburg was named for Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, commander of the American fleet that defeated the British at the Battle of Lake Erie in September 1813, the same year Fort Meigs -- around which the town grew -- withstood two sieges.
Before the town
Perrysburg sits on the twelve-mile-square reserve at the Rapids of the Maumee that the Treaty of Greenville (1795) set aside for the United States, the one tract in the future Wood County to which Native title had already been extinguished before the rest of the county was ceded in 1817; Amos Spafford's 1816 pre-emption grant, immediately west of the future townsite, was the first federal land grant made within the county's present limits. The Battle of Fallen Timbers that produced the Greenville cession was fought a short distance upriver, on ground now in Lucas County near modern Maumee, not at Perrysburg itself. No mound, earthwork or named Native village specific to the Perrysburg townsite was found in the sources consulted. The county's own historian places an Ottawa village downriver at Providence, in Lucas County.

Stories
Dudley's Defeat
On May 5, 1813, during the first siege of Fort Meigs, Colonel William Dudley led Kentucky militia across the Maumee and captured the British siege batteries on the north bank, spiking eleven guns. But when American scouts pursuing fleeing Native warriors were drawn into a losing fight in the woods, Dudley felt bound to help them; General Harrison, watching from the fort, signaled frantically for the Kentuckians to fall back, reportedly crying 'They are lost! They are lost!' as they pressed on regardless. British forces under General Henry Proctor rallied and cut Dudley's men off from the river; nearly the whole detachment was killed or captured, prisoners were forced to run a gauntlet, and Dudley himself was killed and scalped. It remains, in the county's own telling, the costliest single episode of the siege -- worse than the rest of the fighting combined, which cost 80 killed and 180 wounded on the American side.
A courthouse town loses its courthouse
Perrysburg held the Wood County courthouse for 48 years, from the county's 1822 organization until 1870, and by 1833 the town counted a courthouse, jail, schoolhouse, two stores, two taverns, two physicians, two lawyers, about 60 houses and 250 residents. But as farmland drained from the Great Black Swamp filled with settlers well inland, Bowling Green, nearer the county's geographic center, pressed to take the seat away. An 1866 vote, a years-long court fight, and Bowling Green breaking ground on its own courthouse before the litigation even ended settled the question by 1870, and Perrysburg's 1875 attempt to win the seat back failed by 271 votes. The old county jail at 240 West Indiana Avenue survives today as a National Register-listed building, a physical reminder of the decades when Perrysburg, not Bowling Green, ran Wood County's government.
From earthworks to state historic site
After the War of 1812, Fort Meigs was abandoned and its wooden walls left to rot; by 1894, when a photographer documented the site, only earthen mounds and ditches remained to show where the largest wooden-walled fortification in North America had stood. The Hayes family bought the land in 1864 and held it until 1907, when their heirs sold it to the State of Ohio; a monument to the fort's defenders was dedicated on the grounds September 1, 1908. It was not until the late 1960s that the Ohio Historical Society undertook a full reconstruction of the palisades and blockhouses, opening a museum in 1974, and a $6.2 million renovation between 2000 and 2003 rebuilt the wooden walls and repaired the blockhouses again. The fort earned National Historic Landmark status in 1969 and today anchors a 65-acre memorial park just outside the city its garrison once defended.
