How Fox Township, Carroll County began

Fox Township, the only Fox Township in Ohio, was taken from Columbiana County by the state legislature in 1832-33 and covers all of surveyed Township 13, Range 4 -- 23,040 acres. Its main village, Mechanicstown, was laid out in 1836 by Thomas McGavern and grew to about 200 residents with Methodist and Presbyterian churches by 1880; two smaller platted villages, Wattsville and Scroggsfield, also took root. On the morning of July 26, 1863, Confederate raiders under John Hunt Morgan crossed a Fox Township farm during the final days of Morgan's Raid, days before his surrender in nearby Columbiana County. Coal mining and two railroads, the Cleveland & Pittsburgh and the Wheeling & Lake Erie, shaped the township's economy into the 20th century; today it remains entirely unincorporated, home to about 970 people.

Incorporated 1832-1833, by Ohio legislature, taken from Columbiana County.

Where the name comes from

The township was taken from Columbiana County by the Ohio legislature in 1832-33; the 1921 county history gives no reason for the name Fox.

Before the town

No Native American village, mound or trail site specific to Fox Township was found in the sources checked. The township's land lay within the area ceded by the Delaware (Lenape) and Wyandot under the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh, opened to American settlement after the 1795 Treaty of Greenville. Nothing more specific to this township was located.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware), Wyandot.

  3. — The Centreville Record of October 24 prints a petition for a graded road from Thomas Sipilar's wood-yard in Jefferson County through Abraham Myer's mill to William Hoaten's in Fox Township, then still in Columbiana County, and on to the Ohio Canal.
  4. — Thomas McGavern plats Mechanicsburgh (Mechanicstown) on July 17, according to the 1921 list of village plats, which conflicts with the chapter's 1836.
  5. — Thomas McGavern laid out the village of Mechanicstown in the township's northwest.
  6. — David Watt platted the village of Wattsville, which grew to about 50 residents with saw mills and shops.

Stories

The last morning of Morgan's Raid crossed Fox Township

By late July 1863, Confederate Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan's cavalry had ridden more than 1,000 miles through Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio in the deepest Confederate incursion into Union territory of the war, with Union cavalry closing in from several directions. On the morning of July 26, with only hours left before his surrender near West Point in neighboring Columbiana County, Morgan's column crossed Fox Township, passing over the farm of local resident Jonah Queen. It was a small, almost incidental crossing in a raid that was already ending, but it put Fox Township's fields, however briefly, in the path of the northernmost Confederate offensive of the Civil War.

A mechanic's town on the ridge road

Thomas McGavern platted Mechanicstown in 1836, and its name told visitors what the place was for: a service and trade stop for the farms around it rather than a mill town or a river landing. By 1880 it had grown to roughly 200 people and could support both a Methodist and a Presbyterian congregation, respectable for an unincorporated crossroads village. Two smaller neighbors, David Watt's Wattsville (platted 1838, with its own saw mills) and Scroggsfield, named for a pioneer missionary, filled out the township's other trade points, while Fox Township as a whole leaned increasingly on coal mining and its two railroads, the Cleveland & Pittsburgh and the Wheeling & Lake Erie, as the 19th century went on.

The lawyer who became a governor

Benjamin F. Potts, born in Fox Township, married Angeline Jackson, read law with Judge John Tripp at Carrollton, and was practising when the Civil War began. He raised a company for the Thirty-second Ohio Volunteer Infantry, rose from captain to colonel and finally to brigadier general, and was elected state senator for the Stark-Carroll district, where he helped elect John Sherman to the United States Senate. Through Sherman's influence President Grant offered him the governorship of Montana Territory. The 1921 history says that Potts at first refused it, because adoption of the Fifteenth Amendment depended on his vote in the state senate, and accepted later. He died in Montana. His brother Wilson S. Potts was an editor of the Ohio Patriot. The 1921 history also records that the last wild deer killed in Carroll County fell about 1844 in Fox Township, shot by James Ferrell, one of the county's first commissioners, after a three-day chase from the north branch of Yellow Creek.
