How Washington Township, Columbiana County began

Washington Township, on the southern border of Columbiana County, was settled from 1803 by Pennsylvanians and Scottish emigrants and organized in 1816 as Saline Township for the salt works on Yellow Creek. When Carroll County was erected in 1832 and kept the name Saline for the part it took, the Columbiana remnant was renamed Washington on June 3, 1833, with sections added from Wayne Township. Salineville lies in its west; Highlandtown, laid out in 1834 by Angus McDonald, kept the post-office name Inverness from 1838 to 1902. The township had 2,002 residents in 2020.

Settled 1803, platted 1834 (Highlandtown), incorporated 1816 (organized as Saline Township); renamed Washington June 3, 1833, by George Clark and James Sharp (1803); Columbiana County commissioners (township).

Where the name comes from

The township was organized in 1816 as Saline Township, for the salt works on Yellow Creek (the same source of the name of neighboring Salineville). When Carroll County was erected in 1832 and took part of Saline Township with it, keeping the name there, the part remaining in Columbiana was renamed Washington on June 3, 1833, when the commissioners remodeled Wayne, Franklin and Saline townships and added sections 32 to 36 to it. Washington is one of 43 Ohio township names and is presumably for George Washington, but no source reviewed says so.

Before the town

No source reviewed names a Native American village, camp or burial site within Washington Township. The 1879 county history says the first settlers arrived about 1803 and that the discovery of salt on Yellow Creek soon drew salt-boilers, and it records no Native residents or trails here. The 1905 county history mentions a fork in the Indian path followed by Bouquet's army in 1764 'in the southern part of the present county,' where one trail led northwest to Sandusky and another southwest toward Coshocton, but does not place it more closely, so it is not assigned to this township. The township lies within the region ceded under the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and confirmed by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Timeline

  1. — George Clark settles on section 4, coming from Pennsylvania; he becomes the township's first justice of the peace, and James Sharp settles on section 35 the same year.
  2. — A man named Fishel builds the township's first grist-mill, at what became Clark's Mills; it sifts flour through cloth tacked on a small box-frame.
  3. — William McLaughlin sails from Greenock, Scotland with his wife and eight children on the ship George Yorke and settles on section 6; his son Alexander is still living at the age of ninety in 1879.
  4. — Evan McPherson, Alexander Dallas and David Rose come from Scotland on the ship Frances, and McPherson settles on section 6; at the outbreak of the War of 1812 local men offer to enlist at New Lisbon but no arms are provided.
  5. — John Farmer, a Quaker from Hanover Township, takes up at Salineville the salt works previously owned by the Burson brothers; his son James builds the first grist-mill of consequence in 1838.
  6. — The township is organized as Saline Township, later renamed Washington Township.
  7. — After Carroll County takes part of Saline Township in 1832 and keeps the name, the commissioners rename the Columbiana remnant Washington Township and add sections 32 to 36 from Wayne Township.
  8. — Angus McDonald lays out Highlandtown on his own land in the east of the township; Alexander Chisholm opens its first store and becomes its postmaster.
  9. — A post office opens at Highlandtown under the name Inverness, because another Ohio post office already used the Highlandtown name.
  10. — The Associate Reformed congregation is organized at Strain's Mills, now Clark's Mills, in 1837 or 1838; its church is built in 1846.
  11. — The Quaker society at Salineville, which had worshiped in a church built by John and James Farmer and later sold to the Disciples, has lost most of its members by removals; very few Quakers remain in the township this year.
  12. — The Inverness post office closes and the community reverts to the name Highlandtown.
  13. — The census counts 2,002 people in Washington Township.

Stories

A Scottish name that had to wait 64 years

Settlers of Scottish descent who built up the community in the township's eastern corner, near what is now Highlandtown Lake, wanted to name it for the Scottish Highlands their families had come from. They could not: another Ohio post office already held the name Highlandtown when theirs opened in 1838, so the community's post office was instead registered as Inverness, for the Scottish city, a workaround that kept the Scottish reference without the naming conflict. The Inverness post office ran for 64 years, until it closed in 1902 -- and only then, with the naming conflict presumably resolved or lapsed, did the community formally take the name its founders had wanted from the start, Highlandtown, which it has carried ever since.

Too ashamed to ask for Draghorn's letters

George Clark, who came from Pennsylvania in 1803 and settled on section 4, became the first justice of the peace in what is now Washington Township, and he also took a $60 contract to blaze a road fifteen miles from Yellow Creek to New Lisbon as part of the state road from Steubenville, though the 1879 history says the route was unwisely chosen and little of it remained in use. A story told of him concerns William Draghorn, a Scot who settled on section 12. On a visit to New Lisbon, Clark was to ask at the post office for Draghorn's letters, but he decided the name was so ridiculous he was ashamed to say it aloud, until he heard a German at the window ask for a letter for 'Mr. Ruter.' That, Clark announced, was a worse name than Draghorn's, and he would not be ashamed to ask for Draghorn's letters after all.
