How Center Township, Columbiana County began
Center Township was among the first townships organized in Columbiana County in 1803, taking its name simply from its central position in the county, and holds the village of Lisbon -- the county seat -- in its eastern half. Just west of Lisbon the township is also home to the Columbiana County Infirmary, an 1845 poorhouse and, later, mental-health facility built on a 200-acre farm the county commissioners had acquired in 1829 on the period's common belief that farm labor was the best available care for indigent and mentally ill residents; the complex closed as an institution but survives as a National Register-listed building.

Before the town
No specific Native American village, camp or burial site is recorded within Center Township's present boundaries. The township lies within the region ceded under the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and confirmed by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.
Timeline
- — Lewis Kinney and his associates make what is probably the first permanent settlement in the township; Kinney buys the southeast quarter of section 14 and lays out New Lisbon on February 16, 1803.
- — Center Township is organized, among the first in Columbiana County.
- — Township No. 14, Range 3 receives the name Centre soon after the organization of the county, from its central position; its civil records from 1803 to 1825 are lost.
- — The State road through New Lisbon and the Salem and Steubenville road are opened about this year; the roads to Liverpool and Canfield follow a little later.
- — Gideon Hughes, a Quaker, builds a blast furnace near New Lisbon, named Rebecca Furnace for his wife; the 1905 county history calls it the first blast furnace in Ohio. Failing in business, Hughes later leaves to join the Shakers.
- — Arthur Burbeck settles on section 33 and raises six sons there; Davidson Filson settles in the same part of the township at about the same time.
- — Columbiana County commissioners acquire a 200-acre farm west of Lisbon to establish a county infirmary, or poorhouse, on the belief that farm labor offered the best care for indigent residents.
- — Elderkin Potter, a New Lisbon lawyer, breaks ground for the Sandy and Beaver Canal on November 24 near the old Hughes furnace; the canal runs through the township on the north bank of Middle Beaver.

Stories
The county farm for those with nowhere else to go
In 1829 the Columbiana County commissioners bought a 200-acre farm near Lisbon for the county infirmary, which cared for the poor and mentally ill of the county. They did so on the belief that the best environment for the indigent was farm labor. A permanent structure dates from 1845, and a large T-shaped main building had been built by 1861. The complex of four buildings was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, and the infirmary is now closed.
The first blast furnace in Ohio
In 1808 a Quaker named Gideon Hughes came to New Lisbon and started a furnace on Middle Beaver, which he named Rebecca for his wife. The 1905 county history calls it the first blast furnace in Ohio, and says charcoal was made for it as early as that year. The men who worked at it included John McNeal and Charles, Benjamin and Nicholas Wilson, and later James McKinley found work there; a ten-plate stove cast at the Rebecca furnace, on the McKinley farm, was among the relics shown at the county centennial celebration. Hughes failed in business, left for the western part of the state and joined the Shakers. When the Sandy and Beaver Canal was started in 1834 its builders broke ground near the old Hughes furnace, in the presence of a large crowd that heard Elderkin Potter promise the canal would make New Lisbon great.
