How Lisbon began

Lisbon was platted February 16, 1803, by Baptist minister Lewis Kinney as New Lisbon, named for the Portuguese capital, and became Columbiana County's seat the same year the county organized; it shortened its name to Lisbon in 1895. It published the Ohio Patriot, described as Ohio's first newspaper, from 1809 to 1833, and hosted a short-lived, locally controversial communal religious group, the Spirit Fruit Society, from 1899 until hostility over its beliefs on marriage forced it out in 1904. Confederate raider John Hunt Morgan surrendered nearby in July 1863, and the village later gave the country future Supreme Court Justice John Hessin Clarke, Senator and campaign strategist Mark Hanna, and Congressman Clement Vallandigham. Lisbon remains a small county-seat village of under 3,000 people, its courthouse square still anchoring downtown.

Settled 1803, platted 1803-02-16, incorporated 1825-02-07, by Lewis Kinney.

Where the name comes from

Platted in 1803 as New Lisbon, for Lisbon, Portugal; the village shortened its name to Lisbon in 1895.

Before the town

No source reviewed names a specific Native American village, camp or burial site within present Lisbon's boundaries. The village was platted in 1803, after the region's Native land claims had been ceded under the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and confirmed by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville. The county-wide record includes the killing near nearby West Point (in neighboring Madison Township) remembered as the last local bloodshed between Native people and settlers, in 1797 or 1798.

Stories

A prophet, a farm and a scandal in New Lisbon

In 1896 Jacob L. Beilhart returned to his native Ohio, and by 1899 he had settled in New Lisbon and founded the Spirit Fruit Society, a small intentional community built on his belief that people were underdeveloped 'plants' who had not yet borne their final spiritual fruit. About a dozen members shared property and labor communally -- women managing the household, men working the farm -- rejecting personal ownership in favor of what they called free gifts, given without expectation of return. The society survived peacefully enough for five years, incorporating formally as a religious body in 1901, until its views on marriage and free love drew sustained local hostility and press coverage; when a warning began circulating that members might be tarred and feathered, the group judged its position in New Lisbon untenable and relocated to Chicago in late 1904. Remarkably, the community Beilhart had started in a Columbiana County village outlasted him by more than two decades, surviving until 1930 in Illinois and then California -- longer than most American utopian experiments of its era.

The boyhood home of a kingmaker

Dr. Leonard Hanna, an abolitionist and temperance advocate, built a Federal-style house on East High Street in New Lisbon in 1838, and it was there that his son Marcus 'Mark' Hanna grew up before going on to become one of the most powerful political operators of the Gilded Age -- the industrialist and U.S. Senator who managed William McKinley's presidential campaigns and chaired the Republican National Committee, in the process more or less inventing the modern template for a national campaign manager. The house, remodeled in 1907 and later known as the Hanna-Kenty House, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001, a modest reminder that one of the men who shaped how American presidents get elected started out in a county-seat village bedroom in New Lisbon.

Mostly estimated. Only 4% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Lisbon - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.

48,976 days of records, 1892-09-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
