How Sugarcreek began

Sugarcreek grew from Shanesville, laid out in May 1814 by Abraham Shane of New Philadelphia on a ridge in Sugar Creek Township, with a lot reserved for a German school and meeting house. German Reformed and Lutheran churches, mills and a wool-carding trade followed; the Connotton Valley Railroad arrived in 1883, and a fatal floor collapse at a Knights of Pythias festival on December 31, 1881 killed ten. In the 20th century, according to Wikipedia, Swiss cheese-making and a Swiss tourism identity (from the 1950s, especially after 1965) led to the nickname Little Switzerland of Ohio; Shanesville and Sugarcreek merged in 1969. The village had 2,373 residents in 2020.

Settled 1814 (Shanesville), platted May 1814 (Shanesville, 101 lots), incorporated 1969 (merger of Shanesville and Sugarcreek under the Sugarcreek name, according to Wikipedia), by Abraham Shane of New Philadelphia.

Where the name comes from

Shanesville was named for its proprietor, Abraham Shane of New Philadelphia, who laid it out in May 1814 (Wikipedia gives the founder as 'Anthony Shane'; the 1884 county history says Abraham). The village stands in Sugar Creek Township. When Shanesville and the adjoining village of Sugarcreek merged in 1969 the combined village kept the Sugarcreek name.

Before the town

Wikipedia says Shanesville was founded where two Indian trails crossed, now Ohio routes 39 and 93; no source names the nations that used them. The 1884 county history says Indians who took up the hatchet in the War of 1812 had hunted shortly before in the valley of Sugar Creek, and that rumors of an Indian attack once sent settlers fleeing east, to return when the rumor proved false.

  • Indian trail crossing at Shanesville (trail) — the site of present Sugarcreek, at the crossing now followed by Ohio State Routes 39 and 93, pre-1814 (en.wikipedia.org)

  2. — Abraham Shane of New Philadelphia lays out Shanesville in May on the northeast quarter of Section 3 on a ridge nearly a mile from Sugar Creek; the plat is a cross with a public square and 101 lots, lot 100 given for a German school and meeting house (Wikipedia names the founder Anthony Shane and notes two Indian trails crossing at the site).
  3. — Shanesville has 57 residents and a merchant, William D. Mefendish, advertising in the Tuscarawas Chronicle; a tavern keeper named Christopher Ritter moves to the Black Horse tavern in 1821.
  4. — The German Reformed congregation is organized by Rev. W. Reiter; in 1828 the German Reformed and Lutherans jointly build a church, with the cornerstone laid September 3.
  5. — According to Wikipedia, Swiss immigrants begin arriving in the area in the early part of the decade and start a cheese-making industry using milk from local Amish dairy farms.
  6. — Shanesville has 226 residents, 382 in 1850, 321 in 1860, 360 in 1870, and 368 in 1880.
  7. — On New Year's Eve, December 31, the floor of the Goeler Building gives way during a Knights of Pythias festival with over two hundred people present; ten die of burns and injuries.
  8. — The Connotton Valley Railroad opens in spring half a mile east of Shanesville, bringing a planing mill, tile works and a grain warehouse in 1882-83.
  9. — Local organizers create the annual Ohio Swiss Festival, an early step in building the village's Swiss identity.
  10. — Business leaders begin actively remaking the town's public identity around its Swiss heritage, developing what becomes its tourism economy.
  11. — Shanesville and the adjoining village of Sugarcreek merge, adopting the Sugarcreek name for the combined village (according to Wikipedia).
  12. — Sugarcreek's World's Largest Cuckoo Clock appears on the cover of the Guinness World Records book.

Stories

From a trail crossing to Little Switzerland

Shanesville was laid out in May 1814 by Abraham Shane of New Philadelphia (Wikipedia names the founder as Anthony Shane), at a spot where two Indian trails crossed, now the intersection of Ohio State Routes 39 and 93. According to Wikipedia, in the early 1830s Swiss immigrant families settled in the area and, using milk from Amish dairy farms, began making cheese. The town began holding an annual Ohio Swiss Festival in the 1950s and from 1965 built a Swiss tourism identity, with the nickname Little Switzerland of Ohio. Shanesville merged with the neighboring village of Sugarcreek in 1969, taking the Sugarcreek name, and in 1977 the village's giant cuckoo clock appeared on the cover of the Guinness World Records book.

The Shanesville horror

On New Year's Eve 1881 the Knights of Pythias held a festival on the second floor of the Goeler Building, at the southwest corner of the square, and over two hundred people packed the small hall, lingering to hear the village band while boys beat time with their feet. Suddenly the floor parted in the center and the crowd, with a stove, lamps and furniture, fell into the store below. Fire caught the clothes of the victims, and the store doors, barred by the fallen floor, had to be broken down from outside. Ten people died of their injuries, among them Mary Neff, Catharine Yoder and her son Melta, Frederick Schlarb the clothier and Frederick Weimer the blacksmith, and hardly a house in the village was without a sufferer.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
