How Salt Creek Township, Holmes County began

Salt Creek Township lies in the northern part of Holmes County, bordering Wayne County, and grew from 1,730 people in 1840 to about 4,685 by the 2020 census, among the fastest-growing townships in the county. Its documented landmark is the Joseph Armstrong Farmhouse, and its eastern portion holds Mount Hope, an unincorporated Amish-country community whose post office, opened under ZIP 44660, closed temporarily in April 2024 when its building lease expired before a new site was chosen in December 2025.

Settled 1810-1812 (families such as the Harrolds, Snyders, Hurlesses and Thombergs in the east of the township; the Guinns and Buckmasters in 1811), incorporated December 1825 (organized by the county commissioners as township No. 11), by Settlers named in the early county history; Daniel Hutchinson of Salt Creek was the county's first sheriff and William Hutchinson an associate judge in 1825.

Where the name comes from

The name Salt Creek is that of the stream that runs through the township; neither Wikipedia nor the early county accounts say how the creek got its name. It is one of five Salt Creek Townships in Ohio.

Before the town

No Native village or mound is recorded within Salt Creek Township. The township lies north of the treaty-era 'Indian boundary line' of 1785, in the 'new purchase' whose Indian title was extinguished by the Treaty of Fort Industry in 1805; surveying there began in 1807. The early county history records two points. Jonathan Grant, the first white man to build a cabin in the county, did so in July 1809 in the valley of Salt Creek (just to the west, in Prairie Township), and it was an Indian who found his sick camp and sent the boy for help. And Tom Lion, the last Delaware (Lenape) man to keep a camp on the Killbuck, boasted at a house-raising on George Painter's farm in Salt Creek Township, in the presence of a relative of the murdered Hochstetler family, of having helped kill that family on the Pennsylvania border; Lion was never seen in the county afterward. Mount Hope's own Amish settlement history is not covered in the sources consulted.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware).

Stories

Tom Lion's last boast

Tom Lion, an old Delaware man, kept a wigwam on Lion's Run north of Berlin long after his people had ceded the land, and liked to frighten settlers' wives with stories of his old fights with white men and the dried tongues of 99 white persons he kept. The early county history, which heard the story from the settler Anson Wheaton, says that Lion was once friendly with Jacob Ammon, who lived northeast of Millersburg, and borrowed his gun; Ammon threatened to take his life if it was not returned by a certain day, and Lion gave it back in a bad humor. The next day a crowd gathered to raise a house on George Painter's farm in Salt Creek Township. There Lion boasted of having helped murder the Hochstetler family on the Pennsylvania border, within earshot of a young relative of the murdered family. After Lion left, the young man and Ammon were seen going the same way. Lion was never seen in Holmes County again, and Ammon often said he knew where he went; nothing was done, since the people were all glad to be rid of him.
