How Madeira began

Madeira grew up as a post town before being largely laid out as a formal settlement in 1871, taking its name from John Madeira, who owned a large tract of land in the area. It incorporated as a village in 1910 and became a city in August 1959, nearly doubling in area with the 1970 annexation of the South Kenwood area. Its 1901 railroad depot on Railroad Avenue, a late but locally significant addition to the National Register in 2022, is the town's main surviving link to the rail line that shaped its growth. An F3 tornado struck Madeira in August 1969, killing four people and causing more than $3 million in damage. Population reached 6,744 by 1960 and has held near 9,000 to 9,500 since, with 9,487 recorded in 2020.

Platted 1871 (largely laid out), incorporated village, 1910; city, August 1959, by named for landowner John Madeira.

Where the name comes from

Stories

A tornado in August

Madeira had just finished nearly doubling its own footprint through the 1970 South Kenwood annexation when, the year before, in August 1969, an F3 tornado tore through the city with enough force to kill four people and cause more than $3 million in damage -- a heavy toll for a small suburb that had only become a city a decade earlier. The storm arrived without the benefit of modern tornado warning systems that later decades would take for granted, and it remains one of the deadliest single events in the small city's recorded history, a sharp, violent counterpoint to the otherwise steady, unremarkable growth that carried Madeira from a few hundred residents in 1920 to a settled suburban population near 9,500 by the 21st century.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Madeira, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.

47,956 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-28. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
