How Springfield Township, Jefferson County began

Springfield Township covers about 30 square miles in western Jefferson County, having originally been divided among several earlier townships before taking its present configuration. Solomon Miller, from Fayette County, Pennsylvania, was the first settler in 1800, followed by Stewart McClave in 1801 and a further wave of families through 1806. William Kelley operated salt works near Nebo from 1831 to about 1850, drawing on the township's coal, limestone, sandstone and salt deposits. The township's main village, Amsterdam, was laid out in 1828 and is described separately; during the Civil War, Confederate General John Hunt Morgan's raiders passed through the township, entering at East Springfield and proceeding down Yellow Creek without destroying property.

Settled 1800 (Solomon Miller), platted 1828 (Amsterdam), incorporated organization date not found in sources reviewed, by Jefferson County Commissioners.

Where the name comes from

Stories

Morgan's Raiders pass through without a fight

In 1863, Confederate General John Hunt Morgan led his cavalry on the northernmost Confederate raid of the Civil War, sweeping through Indiana and Ohio ahead of pursuing Union forces. When the raiders entered Springfield Township at East Springfield and rode down along Yellow Creek, the county history notes almost matter-of-factly that they proceeded through 'without destroying property' -- a notably restrained passage compared to the raid's reputation elsewhere for looting and destruction, and perhaps a sign that by this stage of their long flight across Ohio, speed mattered more to Morgan's exhausted column than plunder. The raid ended within days in Morgan's capture farther east, but the memory of Confederate cavalry riding down a Jefferson County creek bottom stayed a fixed point in the township's local history for generations after.
