How Ross Township, Jefferson County began
Ross Township, in the northwestern part of Jefferson County, was organized in 1812 and named for James Ross, the Pittsburgh lawyer and U.S. Senator who co-founded Steubenville with Bezaliel Wells in 1797. Early squatters along Yellow Creek included William Castleman, Mark Duke, John Bruce and others, followed by permanent settlers such as Thomas George, Allen Speedy and Isaac Shane. The township developed salt works at section 34's salt springs and, in 1866, the Springfield and Yellow Creek Oil Company struck oil at 500 feet near Brimstone Run, saving about 200 barrels before the well ran dry; salt production continued until 1871. Robert George erected a $700 soldiers' monument in 1871 honoring 31 township men who died in the Civil War. The township remains entirely unincorporated today.
Settled c. 1800-1805 (early squatters and settlers), platted not applicable (township, not platted as a town), incorporated 1812, by Jefferson County Commissioners.
Where the name comes from
Named for Judge James Ross, the Pittsburgh lawyer and U.S. Senator who, with Bezaliel Wells, platted Steubenville in 1797.
Before the town
No source reviewed records a specific Native American village, mound or documented encounter within Ross Township. Early squatters along Yellow Creek arrived around 1800, five years after the Treaty of Greenville (1795) opened the region to settlement, and the township was formally organized in 1812. Yellow Creek, which also flows through neighboring Saline Township (site of the 1774 killing of the Mingo leader Logan's family), runs along part of this township's boundary as well.
Nations recorded here: Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga), Lenape (Delaware), Shawnee.
Timeline
- — Early squatters including William Castleman, Mark Duke, John Bruce, John Davis, Jacob Drake and William Roach settle along Yellow Creek.
- — Ross Township is organized and named for Judge James Ross.
- — The Springfield and Yellow Creek Oil Company strikes oil at 500 feet near Brimstone Run, saving about 200 barrels before the well is exhausted.
- — Salt manufacturing in the township ends; the same year, Robert George erects a $700 soldiers' monument honoring 31 township men who died in the Civil War.
- — Henry Daniels erects a small furnace for boiling salt at the section 34 springs, sinking a hollow sycamore log upright as a reservoir and producing about three bushels of salt a day; by 1879 a cinder mound at the site still marked the 'old United States Salt Works.'
- — Rev. George Scott organizes the Bacon Ridge Presbyterian Church (originally called Richmond church), among the township's earliest institutions, eight years before Ross Township itself was organized.
- — Stephen Coe builds the township's first grist mill, a water mill near present-day Mooretown.
Stories
Two hundred barrels and a dry hole
In 1866, the Springfield and Yellow Creek Oil Company drilled near Brimstone Run in Ross Township and struck oil at 500 feet -- a strike that, for a brief moment, put this quiet agricultural township in the same speculative rush that was reshaping parts of Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio in the years after the Civil War. The company managed to save only about two hundred barrels before the well exhausted itself, a modest yield that never turned Ross Township into an oil boomtown the way Harrison County's Scio or Jewett would become a generation later. The township's older salt works, drawing on natural salt springs at section 34, proved the more durable resource, continuing production until 1871 even as the oil venture came and went within a few years.
Salt at $8.00 a bushel, and the men who chased it
Before Ross Township existed as an organized government, people were already fighting over its salt. In the early 1800s, salt hauled by packhorse from eastern Virginia across the Alleghenies cost $8.00 a bushel in the Ohio Valley, so when settlers learned that the section 34 springs along Yellow Creek carried brine, they moved fast. Henry Daniels built a crude furnace in 1802, sinking a hollowed sycamore log as a reservoir and boiling about three bushels a day; by 1803 demand was so fierce that Isaac Shane traveled to the spring for salt and found it 'thronged with anxious customers,' leaving empty-handed. Coal replaced wood in the furnaces around 1820, and a hand-drilled well eventually struck a vein of brine 300 feet down so strong it could 'carry an egg.' The works were abandoned as unprofitable, but decades later, in 1879, a mound of cinder several rods across still stood on the bank of Yellow Creek marking where the 'old United States Salt Works' had been -- a made feature, not a Native American earthwork, though its presence on the same creek as genuine prehistoric sites elsewhere in the county is a reminder to check what kind of mound a source is describing before assuming which.
