How Knox Township, Jefferson County began

Knox Township, in the far north of Jefferson County along the Ohio River, was settled from 1796 onward; James Alexander arrived that year, followed by Isaac White (1798), James McCoy (1799), and Baltzer Culp and Michael Myers Sr., both in 1800. Myers, a Revolutionary War veteran and former Indian scout who had received a federal land grant, ran a ferry across the Ohio and kept a hotel in a large stone house on the river's west bank for at least forty years -- the same Myers whose land later became the town of Newburg's Landing, renamed Sloane's Station and finally Toronto. The township grew several small communities, including Knoxville, McCoy's Station, New Somerset, Elliottsville and Hammondsville, and by 1880 supported fire-brick and terra cotta works and the Tunnel Grist Mills on Yellow Creek.

Settled 1796 (James Alexander), platted not applicable (township, not platted as a town), incorporated date not found in sources reviewed, by Jefferson County Commissioners.

Where the name comes from

Almost certainly named for Henry Knox, Revolutionary War general and the first U.S. Secretary of War, a common namesake for Ohio townships and counties of this era; the source consulted does not state the naming rationale explicitly.

Before the town

No source reviewed records a specific Native American village, mound or documented encounter within Knox Township, though Michael Myers Sr., one of its earliest settlers (1800), was himself a Revolutionary War veteran who had served as an Indian scout and received his land as a federal grant for that service -- part of a wider pattern across Jefferson County of veteran-scouts settling land they had recently helped contest.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware), Shawnee, Wyandot.

  6. — Henry Boyle lays out Knoxville in March, and Baltzer Culp lays out New Somerset in February, both in the township's interior.
  7. — Lewis K. McCoy lays out McCoy's Station (originally 'Shanghai'), which by later name changes becomes the village of Empire, on the Ohio River at the mouth of Jeremy's Run; Empire is covered separately.

Stories

A ferryman who scouted the same land he later farmed

Michael Myers Sr. settled in Knox Township in 1800, a Revolutionary War veteran who had served the U.S. Army as an Indian scout and received his land as a federal grant for that service. He built a large stone house on the Ohio River's west bank, ran a ferry, and kept a hotel there for at least four decades, becoming one of the township's most enduring fixtures. Myers's land grant near modern Toronto later passed to his heirs and eventually to John Depuy, who platted the settlement that grew into Newburg's Landing, then Sloane's Station, and finally Toronto -- so the same tract Myers had once helped clear of Native resistance as a young scout became, within a generation, the foundation of one of Jefferson County's larger river towns.
