How Perry Township, Lawrence County began
Perry Township lies in southern Lawrence County along the Ohio River and is named for Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, victor of the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813 (Wikipedia gives 1814). The village of South Point, which contains the southernmost point in Ohio, straddles the township's border with Fayette Township at its southern tip, and the unincorporated community of Rock Camp sits in the northwest corner. The township counted 663 people in 1840 and 2,039 in 1890, with post offices at Israel and South Point by 1850. In 1942 construction began on a large government chemical and ordnance plant below South Point, later run by Allied Chemical, and the township had 6,533 residents in 2020.
Where the name comes from
Named in honor of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, who commanded the American fleet that defeated the British at the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812.

From a stagecoach line to the Buckeye Ordnance Works
South Point, occupying Perry Township's southern tip along the Ohio River, was for its first century a small river place: a post office opened there in 1855, and by the early 1850s Thomas McKee was running the first hack (stagecoach) line connecting it to Ironton. The village was not formally established until 1888, taking its name from the plain fact that it contains the southernmost point of land in the state of Ohio. Its quiet river-bottom setting changed abruptly in 1942, when the federal government began construction of the Atmospheric Nitrogen Corporation plant just below the village, known locally as the Buckeye Ordnance Works. The project placed Ironton and its surrounding townships in the government's Industrial Defense zone for the duration of the Second World War. The works, later operated by Allied Chemical, grew into the largest industrial plant in the Ironton-Ashland-Huntington tri-state area, turning a stretch of Perry Township farmland into one of the region's biggest wartime employers.
