How Hamilton Township, Lawrence County began
Hamilton Township, in the western corner of Lawrence County along the Ohio River, was set off from Upper Township in 1850 and named for Robert Hamilton, a wealthy pioneer ironmaster said to have been the first in the nation to shut his furnaces down on Sundays. Luke Kelly's family, Andrew Yingling, and Christopher Stump were among its first settlers, arriving between the late 1790s and 1799 near what became the village of Hanging Rock, the township's largest community and a predecessor of Ironton itself.
Settled 1798-1799 (Andrew Yingling near Hanging Rock, 1798; Christopher Stump near Union Landing, 1799), incorporated 1850 (set off from Upper Township), by settlers including Luke Kelly's family, Andrew Yingling, and Christopher Stump.
Where the name comes from
Named for Robert Hamilton, a pioneer ironmaster and furnace proprietor born in Pennsylvania, who married Nancy Ellison and was, according to local historical-society tradition, the first ironmaster in the nation to shut his furnaces down on Sundays.

Stories
An ironmaster who closed on Sundays
Robert Hamilton, the Pennsylvania-born ironmaster for whom the township is named, built his fortune in the same charcoal furnace trade that drove the rest of Lawrence County's 19th-century economy -- a business that, at most furnaces, ran around the clock and through the calendar to keep the fires from cooling. Hamilton, by the local historical society's account, broke from that pattern: he is remembered as the first ironmaster in the nation to shut his furnaces down on Sundays, a decision that cost production time in an industry where downtime was expensive. He married Nancy Ellison, and the township organized in 1850, split off from the older Upper Township, carried his name into the county's map for good.
