How South Point began
South Point sits at the meeting of Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky on the Ohio River, taking its name from containing the southernmost point in the state of Ohio. A post office under that name opened in Fayette Township in 1855, and the village incorporated in 1888; it grew through the 20th century to become the second-largest municipality in Lawrence County, peaking at nearly 3,918 residents in 1980. A community called North Kenova, named for its position across the river from Kenova, West Virginia, existed within South Point's boundaries by 1918.
Incorporated 1888.
Where the name comes from
Named because the village contains the southernmost point in the state of Ohio, located along the Ohio River less than a mile east of the village itself.
Before the town
No source found records a Native village, mound, trail, or treaty event specific to South Point, whose recorded history begins with an 1855 post office, six decades after the 1795 Treaty of Greenville placed this stretch of the Ohio River within land ceded by the Wyandot, Shawnee, and allied nations. The county's broader Native history is covered at the county level.
Nations recorded here: Shawnee.

Stories
The village at Ohio's southern tip
South Point sits where the Ohio River, West Virginia, and Kentucky all meet, and the village's own name records that fact plainly: it contains the southernmost point in the state of Ohio, a spot along the riverbank less than a mile east of the village itself. A post office bearing the name opened in Fayette Township in 1855, more than three decades before the village formally incorporated in 1888. What began as a small river settlement grew through the industrial and postwar 20th century into the second-largest municipality in Lawrence County, its population more than doubling between 1900 and 1960 and continuing to climb until it peaked near 3,918 residents in 1980 -- a figure it has held close to ever since, even as many of the county's older river towns shrank.

50,401 days of records, 1887-07-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
