How Benton Township, Monroe County began
Benton Township, organized March 27, 1851, was the last township erected by the Monroe County commissioners, formed only after the neighboring counties reorganized following Noble County's creation that same year. Its earliest settlers, though, arrived nearly half a century earlier: Isaac Brown and brothers Joseph and William Cline settled section 25 in 1804, and John Cline followed in 1805, having previously raised hemp for sale at Marietta while living in Virginia. The Cline family, tracing back to a German immigrant, George Cline, who served in the Revolutionary War, also appears among the founding settlers of neighboring Washington Township.
Settled 1804 (Isaac Brown, Joseph and William Cline), incorporated 1851-03-27 (township organized, the last erected in the county), by Monroe County commissioners.

Stories
Johnny Cline and the snake
The first cabins in what became Benton Township were built by Isaac Brown and Joseph and William Cline in 1804, and John Cline entered the first Congress land in section 25 in 1805, paying with the proceeds of a hemp crop he had raised near Sistersville and sold at Marietta. Joseph and Sarah Cline's daughter Mary was born on April 5, 1805, and George and Christina Cline's daughter, also named Mary, the next day, and Solomon Tice married Rosa Cline in 1806. Two years or so after the first settlement a child, Johnny Cline, son of William and Polly Cline, died: he was believed to have been bitten in the night by a poisonous snake and was dead by the next morning. The elder George Cline, father of the Cline brothers, had come from Germany to Pennsylvania, fought in the Revolution and, after the settlement of Marietta, moved west to near what is now Grandview in Washington County.
