How Champion Township, Trumbull County began

Champion Township was named for General Henry Champion, a Connecticut Land Company shareholder who owned the entire township outright by December 1798 and hoped, unsuccessfully during his own lifetime, to sell it off at ten dollars an acre against the $2.50 he had paid. Settlement was slow -- William Rutan, arriving from Pennsylvania in 1806, was the first permanent resident, and only six more families had joined him twenty years later -- and the township was not formally organized until December 1831, after Champion's death in 1825 had split his holdings between his son Aristarchus and his son-in-law Henry C. Trumbull. It remains the only township named Champion in Ohio, a farming community bordering Warren on the county's north side.

Settled 1806 (William Rutan, first permanent settler), incorporated organized December 1831, by township organizers, on land General Henry Champion had held since 1798.

Where the name comes from

The township is named for General Henry Champion, a Connecticut Land Company investor who had acquired the entire township by December 1798, having bought it at about $2.50 an acre; he hoped to resell it at $10 an acre but sold little during his own lifetime. After his death in 1825, his son Aristarchus Champion inherited the township's western half and his son-in-law Henry C. Trumbull the eastern half; the two heirs hired a surveyor in 1826 to market the remaining land at more competitive prices.

Before the town

No Native village, camp or treaty event specific to Champion Township is recorded in the sources we reviewed. The township lies in the same Mahoning-valley hunting territory the county's 1882 history assigns generally to Delaware, Seneca and Mingo bands through the 1700s, but no source found names a site inside the township's present boundaries. General Henry Champion's purchase of the township, completed by 1798, took place seven years before the 1805 Treaty of Fort Industry formally extinguished Native title to the Western Reserve, the same pattern of land changing hands on paper before the United States held clear title that runs across the Reserve's other townships.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware), Seneca, Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga).

Stories

A general's land, sold twice over by his heirs

General Henry Champion never lived on the Ohio township that carries his name; he bought it whole, as an investment, completing the purchase by December 1798 at about $2.50 an acre and hoping to resell it at four times that price. The market never obliged him in his own lifetime -- only William Rutan in 1806 and, over the following twenty years, six more families ever took him up on it, a pace slow even by Western Reserve standards. When Champion died in 1825, the unsold township split between his son Aristarchus and his son-in-law Henry C. Trumbull, and it was the heirs, not the general, who finally hired a surveyor in 1826 to price the remaining land to actually move -- a small, telling detail about how much of the Western Reserve's settlement was driven less by pioneers pushing west than by absentee Connecticut investors and their heirs slowly discovering what land was actually worth to the people willing to farm it. The township did not organize its own government until December 1831, thirty-three years after Champion first bought the land outright.
