The history under the water: the valley before, the dam, the stories. All Ohio lakes

How Cortland began

Cortland was settled in 1807 by Samuel Bacon on the Mahoning River, with a mill dam under construction by 1809, but did not take its present name until decades later, when a relocated minister named Orrin Gates, originally from Cortland, New York, named the growing village for his hometown. It incorporated as a village in 1873, built a new town hall the following year, and grew quietly as a Mahoning River mill town and later Mosquito Creek Lake community, finally crossing the 5,000-population threshold to become a city in 1981 after nearly doubling in size between 1960 and 1980.

Settled 1807, by Samuel Bacon, incorporated 1873, as a village; became a city in 1981, by Samuel Bacon (settler); named by Orrin Gates.

Where the name comes from

The settlement was named Cortland by Orrin Gates, a minister who had relocated from Cortland, New York, and chose to name his new Ohio home for the town he had left.

Before the town

No Native village, camp or treaty event specific to the Cortland town site is recorded in the sources we reviewed. The site lies on the Mahoning River, within the valley the county's 1882 history describes as Delaware-occupied hunting ground used seasonally by Seneca and Mingo bands through the 1700s, but no source found names a town or camp at this specific location.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware), Seneca, Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga).

Stories

Renamed for a hometown its founder never lived in

Samuel Bacon's 1807 settlement on the Mahoning, with its 1809 mill dam, spent its first decades without the name it carries today; it was a transplanted minister, Orrin Gates, who renamed the growing village for Cortland, New York, the town he himself had left behind -- one small example of the wave of homesick New York and New England place names scattered across the Connecticut Western Reserve by settlers naming new homes for old ones. The village grew unhurriedly for another century, formally incorporating only in 1873 and building its first proper town hall the year after. Its most dramatic growth came much later and for a very different reason: sitting along the eastern shore of Mosquito Creek Lake, Cortland nearly doubled in population between 1960 and 1980, part of the same postwar Warren-area suburban expansion that reached Howland Township, and crossed the 5,000-resident threshold to become a city in 1981.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
