How Greenfield Township, Gallia County began

Greenfield Township is the westernmost township in Gallia County, bordering Jackson County to the north and northwest and Lawrence County to the south and west. Daniel Faulkner built the township's first cabin in 1806 at the forks of Symmes Creek, and the township was organized March 20, 1818. Its notable 19th-century industry was Gallia Furnace, a stock-company iron furnace established in 1847 on a 6,000-acre tract of coal and iron land, which in its day produced iron for car wheels and machinery and gave its name to the small village laid out beside it in 1846. The township sits near, but not inside, the Welsh settlement centered on Oak Hill and Jackson in neighboring Jackson County, and it has no incorporated municipality of its own.

Settled 1806, incorporated 1818-03-20, by First cabin built by Daniel Faulkner, an Irish immigrant, at the forks of Symmes Creek.

Stories

A furnace on the Dirty Face

In 1847 a stock company organized that same year established Gallia Furnace on Dirty Face Creek in the far west of Gallia County, on a 6,000-acre tract holding extensive coal fields and heavy deposits of iron ore and limestone. The furnace, sited to produce iron suitable for car wheels and heavy machinery, ran at a capacity of about three thousand tons a year, and the Toledo, Cincinnati & St. Louis Narrow Gauge Railroad was built through the company's coal lands, which held a four-foot vein of iron-smelting coal, to move its output. A small village, laid out beside the furnace in 1846, took the operation's name and had grown to a population of 136 by 1880. By the time the 1882 county history was compiled, the company was preparing to build a larger furnace and hoped to draw manufacturers of agricultural implements to what it called an excellent shipping point -- an ambition the source itself did not live to confirm; we have not found whether it came to pass.
