How Oak Hill began

Oak Hill grew from a country store that New York-born Julius Bingham opened in 1832 at a crossroads where a township road met the old Indian trail called Guyan Trace, in what was then Jefferson and Madison townships. Bingham laid out a village on the hill around his store, named for the oak trees on it, and the settlement became a center for Welsh immigrants who began arriving in the area in 1818 and poured in during the 1830s-40s "Great Welsh Tide." Iron (Jefferson Furnace, credited with supplying plate for the ironclad USS Monitor) and later a firebrick industry starting in the 1870s built the local economy, and the village was formally incorporated on January 12, 1873, out of Jefferson and Madison townships. Oak Hill remains a center of Welsh-American heritage in Ohio, with its Welsh Congregational church now a heritage museum.

Settled 1832 (Bingham's store); earlier scattered settlement in the area by 1799, platted 1832-1833, incorporated January 12, 1873, by Julius Bingham.

Where the name comes from

Named for the oak trees on the hill east of the town and in the surrounding area, where Julius Bingham laid out the village around his store.

Before the town

Oak Hill sits astride the Guyan Trace, an Indian trail that ran between the Scioto Salt Licks at Jackson and hunting grounds south of the Ohio River; Massie Spring along the trace was recorded as a camping place for Native travelers moving between the licks and those hunting grounds. All the Ohio nations were allowed to visit the salt licks to make salt, including bands at war with one another, who by custom held a truce during the visits. No source found names a village, mound, or burial site specifically on the Oak Hill town site.

Nations recorded here: Shawnee, Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga), Lenape (Delaware).

Stories

A store on a hill becomes a village

Before it was a village, the ground was just a crossroads: a township road bound for Gallipolis crossing the old Guyan Trace, the Indian trail that once carried travelers between the Scioto Salt Licks and hunting country south of the Ohio River. In 1832 Julius Bingham, a transplant from New York who had bought 80 acres nearby, opened a small country store at that crossing. To draw trade he laid out a village site on the hill around the store and organized a Sunday school that met, in the warm months, under the oak trees just east of it — the trees that gave the place its name. It took another forty years for the settlement to formally incorporate, in 1873, but the store and the oaks were the beginning.

The Welsh tide and the chapel that became a museum

Welsh families from Cardiganshire began reaching the Gallia and Jackson county hill country in 1818, drawn by iron furnace and coal work and by farmland; far larger numbers followed in the 1830s and 1840s, an era local historians call the Great Welsh Tide. Welsh Congregationalists among them organized a church in 1832, the same year Bingham opened his store, and the congregation moved into Oak Hill nine years later. Their permanent building on East Main Street, finished in 1869 in the Greek Revival style, held services partly in the Welsh language into the 1920s. The congregation lasted 130 years before disbanding in 1962; Baptists used the building briefly, and in 1972 Oak Hill's Welsh-descended residents reclaimed it as the Welsh-American Heritage Museum, which it remains.

49,765 days of records, 1890-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
