How Sharon Township, Medina County began

Sharon Township carries Medina County's oldest human story: the Paleo Crossing site, a Clovis-culture hunting camp excavated by the Cleveland Museum of Natural History in the early 1990s near Sharon Center, among the earliest documented traces of people anywhere in the Americas. The township itself was organized far later and under a different name, first as Hart & Mathers Township and then briefly as Gask Township -- a name a surveyor gave it that lasted only three months before settlers renamed it Sharon in 1829, formally reorganized by the state legislature in 1830-31. Sharon Center supported one of the county's most respected 19th-century schools, the Sharon Academy, chartered in 1836. Today the township surrounds the census-designated place of Sharon Center and shares its southern edge with the city of Wadsworth.

Incorporated 1830-1831 (renamed and reorganized as Sharon Township by act of the state legislature; formally organized April 1831), by originally organized as Hart & Mathers Township, then briefly Gask Township before settlers chose Sharon.

Where the name comes from

The township was first organized as Hart & Mathers Township, then briefly renamed Gask Township by a surveyor -- a name that lasted only three months before settlers chose to rename it Sharon instead. The Ohio Legislature made the change official in 1830, and the township formally organized as Sharon Township in April 1831. Four townships in Ohio share the name Sharon.

Before the town

Sharon Township holds the oldest documented human presence anywhere in Medina County: the Paleo Crossing site, on private land near the junction of Ridgewood and State Roads close to Sharon Center, where a local collector's discovery of Clovis-style spearheads led the Cleveland Museum of Natural History to excavate more than 10,000 artifacts between 1990 and 1993, including two or three post holes suggesting a structure and refuse-pit charcoal. The excavators' original radiocarbon date of about 10,980 years before present (roughly 9,000 BC) would make it one of the oldest confirmed sites of human activity in the Americas, but a 2020 re-analysis concluded the site's age should be treated as unconfirmed rather than settled; roughly 80 percent of the stone tools recovered were made from Wyandotte chert quarried some 500 miles away in southern Indiana, pointing to a wide-ranging social and trade network among these earliest Ohioans. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 30, 1992. No Native site from the later historic period (18th-19th century Wyandot, Delaware, Shawnee, Ottawa, Chippewa or Potawatomi presence) has been documented specifically within Sharon Township; the county-level history file carries the fuller historic-era treaty context.

Nations recorded here: Paleo-Indian (Clovis culture).

Timeline

  1. — Clovis-culture people camp at what becomes the Paleo Crossing site near Sharon Center, leaving spearheads, blades and post holes later excavated by the Cleveland Museum of Natural History; a 2020 re-analysis has since questioned this original dating.
  2. — Settlers rename the township, then called Gask Township by a surveyor for only three months, to Sharon.
  3. — The Ohio Legislature formally changes the township's name to Sharon by act.
  4. — Sharon Township formally organizes under its new name.
  5. — Sharon Academy is chartered and a two-story building erected in Sharon Center, gaining a wide reputation for quality secondary education; enrollment reaches as many as 112 students before it is later replaced by a publicly funded high school.
  6. — The original Sharon Academy building is torn down to make room for a Universalist Church, and another building is fitted out for instruction.
  7. — The Matthew Chandler House, south of Sharon Center, is built (added to the National Register of Historic Places March 30, 1978).
  8. — The Cleveland Museum of Natural History excavates the Paleo Crossing site, recovering more than 10,000 Clovis-era artifacts.
  9. — The Paleo Crossing site is added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Stories

Ohio's Oldest Known Campsite

In the late 1980s, a local collector walking a freshly turned field near Sharon Center noticed something unusual: not the scattered arrowheads farmers routinely find, but a concentration of finely worked stone points in a distinctive fluted style. When Dr. David Brose, then curator of archaeology at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, examined them, he recognized Clovis points -- the signature tool of some of the very first people known to have lived in the Americas. The museum excavated the site, since named Paleo Crossing, from 1990 to 1993, recovering more than 10,000 artifacts across roughly four acres, along with two or three post holes that hint at a temporary shelter and pits full of refuse and charcoal. Unusually for a Clovis site, roughly 80 percent of the stone tools were made from a chert quarried some 500 kilometers away in southern Indiana -- physical evidence that the small band camped here belonged to a hunting and trading network that spanned much of the eastern half of the continent. The excavators' original dating put the camp at nearly 11,000 years old, among the oldest confirmed human sites in the Americas, though a 2020 scientific re-analysis has since called that specific age into question -- a reminder that even a site this well studied can still have its story revised.

A Name That Didn't Survive Three Months

Sharon Township went through more names in its first years than almost any other in Medina County. Early organizers first called it Hart & Mathers Township, then a surveyor renamed it Gask Township -- a name so unpopular, or so arbitrary, that it lasted barely three months before the settlers themselves overruled it and adopted Sharon instead. It took another year for the state legislature to make the change official in 1830, and the township did not formally reorganize under its lasting name until April 1831. What the settlers built once the naming settled down endured rather better: Sharon Academy, chartered in 1836, grew into one of the county's most respected schools, drawing as many as 112 students to Sharon Center before the rise of publicly funded high schools eventually made a private academy unnecessary.
