How Concord Township, Ross County began
Concord Township, organized May 10, 1803, is the largest township in Ross County by area and was settled in part by Revolutionary War veterans who took up land warrants along the North Fork of Paint Creek. Its principal town, Frankfort, began as Oldtown in 1816, on or near ground that had carried the name Chillicothe under the Shawnee before 1795 - one of several Ohio places that bore that name at different times. A post office called Old Town opened in 1817, the village incorporated in 1827, and the name changed to Frankfort in 1834. A Hopewell burial mound, the Frankfort Works Mound, still stands on the village's west side, a direct link between the township's prehistoric and historic layers. Today Concord Township is farmland drained by Paint Creek, with Frankfort and the unincorporated hamlet of Roxabell as its trading points.
Settled 1790s (early Revolutionary War-warrant settlers), platted 1816 (Frankfort, as Oldtown), incorporated 1827 (Frankfort), by township organized May 10, 1803; Oldtown/Frankfort laid out 1816.
Where the name comes from
Concord Township is one of seven townships named Concord in Ohio; no specific naming story for this one was found. Frankfort was originally platted as Oldtown in 1816; a post office under the name Old Town opened in 1817, and the settlement was renamed Frankfort in 1834, presumably for the German or Kentucky city, though no source found states the reason directly.
Before the town
Frankfort stands on or very near one of the several Ohio locations historically called Chillicothe (Shawnee Chala·ka·tha, 'principal town'), the name the Shawnee applied wherever a division's chief town stood. Sources describing the historic Chillicothe near Circleville and Chillicothe city also note a Chillicothe town 'at present-day Frankfort, Ross County, on Paint Creek,' among five or more places in Ohio that carried the name at different times; no source found gives that Frankfort-area town a precise date range or names its residents, and it should not be treated as fully pinned to a specific plat or site without a dedicated archaeological source. What is documented on the ground is the Frankfort Works Mound, a Hopewell-era burial mound on the west side of the village, listed on the National Register of Historic Places (#73001530, listed May 17, 1973) - concrete evidence of Adena/Hopewell-period (roughly 800 BC to AD 500) use of this stretch of the North Fork of Paint Creek valley, independent of the later Shawnee place name. No National Register or Ohio History Central source was found identifying a specific historic-era Shawnee, Wyandot, or other nation's town, trail, or treaty line elsewhere in Concord Township; the broader Shawnee towns of the Scioto and Pickaway Plains bracket this area.

Stories
One name, twice over
Frankfort carries a double naming history that says something about how Ohio settlement layered onto Shawnee ground. Before 1795 the Shawnee are recorded as having used the name Chillicothe, meaning roughly 'principal town,' at a string of different sites across the state as their leading towns moved; one of those Chillicothe sites is described in general sources as standing at or near present-day Frankfort on Paint Creek, alongside others near Xenia, Piqua, and south of Circleville. When settlers platted a village on the same ground in 1816 they called it Oldtown - old town - a name that, whether or not the platters intended it, echoed the fact that a Native town had stood there before. The settlement kept the Oldtown name through its 1817 post office and 1827 incorporation before the state renamed it Frankfort in 1834, erasing the direct verbal link even as the Frankfort Works Mound, a few hundred yards away, kept the physical evidence of the valley's much older, pre-Shawnee Hopewell occupation in the ground.
A mound inside the village
The Frankfort Works Mound sits on the west side of the village, close enough to town that it has stood in the middle of Frankfort's daily life since the town was platted around it. Built by Hopewell people roughly two thousand years ago, it was one of many earthworks and burial mounds that once studded the Paint Creek and Scioto valleys before farming and town-building leveled most of them; its survival into the twentieth century, intact enough to be listed on the National Register in 1973, makes it one of the few places in Concord Township where the prehistoric landscape is still visible rather than only recorded in an old survey.
