How Covington began
Covington sits in Newberry Township in the northwest of Miami County, on the site of Fort Rowdy, a 1793 post of General Anthony Wayne's army. Daniel Wright and Jacob Ullery platted the village in 1816 on ground that had already been called Friendship and, in local memory, 'Rowdy'; a post office opened as Stillwater in 1825, and the community took the name Covington in 1836. Growth was slow at first, but the village incorporated in 1835 and grew into Newberry Township's commercial and government center, anchored today by the 1849 building that houses its local history museum.
Settled 1793 (Fort Rowdy), platted 1816, incorporated 1835, by Daniel Wright and Jacob Ullery.
Where the name comes from
Early names for the settlement included Friendship, Newberry, and 'Rowdy,' a name local tradition traces to a celebration held by officers under General Anthony Wayne. The post office was established as Stillwater in 1825; it was renamed Covington in 1836, the name the village incorporated under in 1835.
Before the town
Covington was platted on the site of Fort Rowdy (1793), a camp of General Anthony Wayne's army during the Northwest Indian War; the 1880 county history says a block-house was built there in 1812 by Capt. George Buchanan's company. No named Native village, mound or treaty boundary specific to the village site is recorded beyond the fort itself.

Stories
From Fort Rowdy to a town of three families
Long before it was a village, the ground at Covington held Fort Rowdy, a 1793 camp of General Anthony Wayne's army during the last years of the Northwest Indian War. More than two decades later, in 1816, Daniel Wright and Jacob Ullery laid out thirty-six lots on the site, and locals kept calling the place 'Rowdy' for years afterward, a name county tradition attributes to a celebration thrown by officers under General Anthony Wayne. The plat did not translate into quick growth: by 1826 the village counted only three families. A post office opened under the name Stillwater in 1825, and only in 1836, a year after incorporation, did the town settle for good on the name Covington.

48,583 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
