How Bethel Township, Clark County began
Bethel Township, in the southwestern corner of Clark County, holds the county's earliest recorded permanent settlement: John Paul's 1790 cabin at the forks of Honey Creek, five years before the Treaty of Greenville formally opened the region to white settlement. James Donnel's 1830 plat became the village of Donnelsville. The Mad River forms the township's southeastern border. It remained a farming township through the nineteenth century, with New Carlisle (platted 1810 as Monroe, later renamed) growing into the area's principal town, and it is where John Dillinger committed his first bank robbery in 1933.
Settled 1790, by John Paul, at the forks of Honey Creek.
Where the name comes from
No source found gives a documented origin for the name 'Bethel' (a biblical place name meaning 'house of God,' commonly used by early Ohio settlers for townships and churches); Ohio has two other Bethel Townships, in Miami and Monroe counties.
Before the town
The township holds the ground of the Battle of Piqua: on August 8, 1780, George Rogers Clark's Kentucky militia destroyed the Shawnee town of Piqua (Peckuwe) on the Mad River here, and the battlefield, north of Enon, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Pickaway Settlements Battlesite on May 8, 1980. No other mound, village, trail, or treaty site specific to Bethel Township was found in the sources checked. John Paul's 1790 settlement at the forks of Honey Creek predates the 1795 Treaty of Greenville by five years, meaning it was made on land the Shawnee, Wyandot, Lenape (Delaware), Mingo, and Miami had not yet ceded to the United States; no source describes how that settlement was received by, or interacted with, Native people already using the area.

Stories
The county's first cabin, five years before it was legal
In 1790, five years before the Treaty of Greenville brought a formal peace and land cession to this part of Ohio, John Paul built a cabin at the forks of Honey Creek, in what would become Bethel Township. It stands as the first recorded permanent settlement in the territory that later became Clark County. The area was still contested ground: American forces and the Shawnee, Wyandot, Lenape, Mingo, and Miami were in open conflict through the early 1790s, and the county itself would later be named for George Rogers Clark, who had burned the Shawnee town of Piqua a decade earlier on the Mad River, within this same township. No source consulted records what became of Paul's cabin or how long it stood before more settlers followed in the years after Greenville.
Dillinger's first job
On June 21, 1933, a young ex-convict named John Dillinger walked into the New Carlisle National Bank and walked out with roughly $10,000, his first bank robbery and the start of a criminal career that would make him the country's most wanted man within a year. The bank building still stands at the corner of Main and Jefferson streets in New Carlisle, in Bethel Township, a small-town footnote to a much larger story that ended with Dillinger's death at the hands of federal agents in Chicago in July 1934.
