How New Carlisle began
New Carlisle began in 1810 as a settlement called Monroe on the National Road corridor in what is now Bethel Township, and was renamed for Carlisle, Pennsylvania, the birthplace of some of its first settlers. It incorporated as a village in 1831 and grew slowly as a farm-trade town through the nineteenth century. On June 21, 1933, the town gained an unusual place in criminal history when John Dillinger, freshly paroled from the Indiana State Penitentiary, robbed the New Carlisle National Bank of about $10,000 in his first bank job; the building at Main and Jefferson Streets still stands. New Carlisle was elevated from village to city status in 1973 and today is a small city of roughly 5,500 people on Clark County's northwestern edge.
Settled 1810, platted 1810, incorporated 1831, by settlers who first named the site Monroe, then renamed it for Carlisle, Pennsylvania, home town of some of the earliest arrivals.
Where the name comes from
The settlement was originally laid out and named Monroe in 1810. It was later renamed New Carlisle, a transfer name from Carlisle, Pennsylvania, the birthplace of some of the town's first settlers.
Before the town
No source consulted names a specific Native village, mound, or trail within New Carlisle's own city limits. The city sits in Bethel Township, on land ceded to the United States by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville; the wider township and Mad River Township to the south hold the county's most significant documented Native sites, including the Shawnee town of Piqua (Peckuwe) near present-day Enon, about 8 miles southeast, and the Pickaway Settlements Battlesite recorded by the National Register just north of Enon in Bethel Township itself, connected to the 1780 Battle of Piqua. No excavation, mound, or named village is recorded for the ground New Carlisle occupies.
Nations recorded here: Shawnee, Wyandot, Lenape (Delaware), Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga).

Stories
Dillinger's First Job
John Dillinger was paroled from the Indiana State Penitentiary on May 10, 1933, after serving nine and a half years for a botched robbery he had committed as a young man. Released into the depths of the Great Depression with little chance of finding work, he went back to what he knew. On June 21, 1933, he walked into the New Carlisle National Bank at the southeast corner of Main and Jefferson Streets and took about $10,000 — roughly $241,000 in today's money. It was the first bank Dillinger ever robbed, opening a spree that would make him the most wanted man in America within a year. The bank building he robbed still stands at that corner today.

48,444 days of records, 1893-06-02 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
