How Centerville began

Centerville was surveyed in February 1796 by three brothers-in-law from New Jersey, Aaron Nutt, Benjamin Archer, and Benjamin Robbins, and named by Robbins for his hometown of Centreville, New Jersey, citing the new settlement's position between two rivers and near several other communities. The state recognized it in 1803, it was platted in 1805, and it incorporated as a town in 1830, becoming a city on December 2, 1968. Its abundant local limestone gave it what is now the largest surviving collection of early stone houses in Ohio, concentrated around the historic Franklin and Main streets crossroads known as the Four Corners. Today Centerville is a Dayton-area suburb in Washington Township whose historic Uptown district of stone buildings and brick sidewalks is preserved under a city architectural preservation ordinance dating to 1972.

Settled 1796, platted 1805, incorporated 1830 (town); December 2, 1968 (city), by Aaron Nutt, Benjamin Archer, and Benjamin Robbins, surveyors from New Jersey.

Where the name comes from

Benjamin Robbins named the settlement Centreville after his hometown of Centreville, New Jersey, citing its location between two rivers and its proximity to several other communities. The U.S. Post Office changed the spelling from 'Centreville' to 'Centerville' in 1900.

Before the town

No mound, earthwork, village, or trail specific to the Centerville/Washington Township site is turned up in the sources checked (Wikipedia's Centerville article, Ohio History Central searches, and the Centerville-Washington History society's site). The land here fell within territory ceded by the Treaty of Greenville (1795), which is what opened it to the New Jersey surveying party that platted Centerville the following year, but no known source names a specific Native settlement, trail, or burial site within the city's boundaries. Broader Adena and Hopewell mound-building activity is well documented elsewhere in the Miami Valley and Montgomery County.

Timeline

  1. — Aaron Nutt, Benjamin Archer, and Benjamin Robbins, brothers-in-law from New Jersey, survey the future site of Centerville.
  2. — Benjamin Robbins's family arrives from Dry Ridge, Kentucky on April 6 to settle the site; Dr. John Hole, who had arrived in the region in 1796, also settles nearby along the creek later named for him.
  3. — Peter Sunderland, son of an early Ohio settler, marries Nancy Robbins, daughter of co-founder Benjamin Robbins, on October 15 in the first wedding ceremony performed in Washington Township.
  4. — Centerville is officially recognized by the State of Ohio.
  5. — Aaron Nutt plats the block at the future Four Corners of Franklin and Main streets; the two-story stone house later known as the Asahel Wright House is built here around this time.
  6. — Asahel Wright, great-uncle of Orville and Wilbur Wright, buys the already-standing stone house at the Four Corners on August 16; it is his name the house carries today.

  8. — The U.S. Post Office changes the town's official spelling from 'Centreville' to 'Centerville.'
  9. — Erma Bombeck and her husband build the house at 162 Cushwa Drive, where she writes many of the early columns that made her a nationally syndicated humorist; the family lives there until 1971, when they move to Paradise Valley, Arizona.

  11. — The City of Centerville passes an ordinance creating an Architectural Preservation District to protect the historic stone-building core around the Four Corners.

Stories

A hidden room under the Sunderland farmhouse

In the late 1820s the Peter Sunderland family, whose farm sat on what is now East Alex-Bell Road, sheltered a runaway enslaved man who worked for them until his Kentucky owner learned of his whereabouts from a suitor courting one of the Sunderland daughters. The story survived only as local memory until decades later, when the old Sunderland house was being demolished and family members found a door hidden behind a cellar cabinet. It opened into a plastered, muraled room about twelve by fourteen feet under the front porch, with a dirt floor and a brick-lined tunnel leading to a second hidden room under the front lawn. Peter Sunderland had married Nancy Robbins, daughter of Centerville co-founder Benjamin Robbins, in the township's first recorded wedding in 1799. Local tradition holds that Centerville and Washington Township had at least four such Underground Railroad safe houses in the antebellum years, of which the Sunderland farm is the best documented.

The Wright family's stone house at the Four Corners

When Aaron Nutt platted the block at the intersection of Franklin and Main streets around 1805, a two-story stone house went up that was among the first permanent buildings in the new settlement, raised from the Dayton Formation limestone that would come to define Centerville's built landscape. The house took its name not from its builder but from Asahel Wright, who bought the already decade-old building on August 16, 1816. Wright's younger brother, Dan Wright Jr., was the grandfather of Orville and Wilbur Wright, making the Four Corners stone house a property once held by the aviation pioneers' great-uncle. The building survives today as the Asahel Wright House Museum, restored in 1999 through a partnership of the local historical society, the city's arts commission, and the Landmarks Foundation of Centerville-Washington Township.

A humorist's ranch house becomes a landmark

Erma Bombeck and her husband built a modest ranch house at 162 Cushwa Drive in 1959, one of a row of nearly identical postwar homes in a Centerville subdivision. It was here, chronicling the ordinary frustrations of Midwestern suburban housewifery, that Bombeck wrote many of the columns that grew into a newspaper syndication reaching millions of readers, a shelf of books, and regular appearances on Good Morning America. The Bombecks left Cushwa Drive for Paradise Valley, Arizona, in 1971, but the house remained a private residence until the Landmarks Foundation of Centerville-Washington Township pursued and won it a listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015, citing both the house's integrity and the character of its unusually intact ranch-house streetscape.

Mostly estimated. Only 4% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Centerville - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.

48,874 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-28. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
