How Kettering began
Kettering grew out of Van Buren Township, created in 1841 from Dayton's expanding farm country south and east of the city; the township's earliest known settler, John Patterson, built its first log cabin in 1798. The area stayed largely rural and semi-rural, with a scatter of large estates belonging to Dayton industrialists, until Van Buren Township voters approved incorporation as the Village of Kettering in November 1952, taking the name of inventor and philanthropist Charles F. Kettering, who had lived nearby for decades. A 1953 secession by the township's western section created what is now Moraine, and Kettering itself grew so fast in the postwar suburban boom that it reached city status by 1955, becoming, and remaining, the most populous suburb in the Dayton metropolitan area.
Settled 1798, incorporated 1952-11, by Voters of Van Buren Township, incorporating as the Village of Kettering; city status followed in 1955.
Where the name comes from
The new village took the name of Charles F. Kettering, the Dayton-area inventor (the electric self-starter, and co-founder of Delco) and philanthropist who lived at his estate, Ridgeleigh Terrace, in the area from 1914 until his death in 1958, and who Kettering's own city history calls its 'most outstanding citizen.'
Before the town
No Native American village, mound, earthwork, trail or treaty site specific to present-day Kettering is recorded; local histories of this stretch of Van Buren Township begin with the log-cabin farm settlement of the late 1790s and say nothing about earlier Native occupation of the specific ground. Like the rest of Montgomery County, the land was within territory ceded by the Wyandot, Shawnee, Miami and allied nations under the Treaty of Greenville (1795), and the broader Great Miami valley (a few miles north, at the Mad River confluence in Dayton) was documented Miami and Shawnee hunting and contested ground before that treaty. The Adena-era Miamisburg Mound lies a few miles south in Miami Township.

Stories
Charles Kettering and the self-starter
Charles F. Kettering left National Cash Register in 1909 to chase a problem that was killing and maiming drivers: the hand crank used to start automobile engines, which could kick back hard enough to break an arm or jaw. Working with Cadillac's Henry M. Leland, Kettering and his new company, the Dayton Engineering Laboratories Company (Delco), had a practical electric self-starter ready by February 1911, and it appeared on 1912 Cadillacs, a change that made cars practical for far more drivers, including many women who had been physically shut out of hand-cranking. Kettering sold Delco into General Motors in 1918 and went on to a long career as GM's head of research, but he kept his home in what would later be the city named for him, building his estate Ridgeleigh Terrace in 1914, reportedly the first house in the country fitted with Freon-based electric air conditioning. He lived there until his death in 1958, three years after Van Buren Township's new city took his name.
A governor's estate on Governors Trail Road
James M. Cox, twice governor of Ohio and founder of the newspaper and media company that became Cox Enterprises, built Trailsend on what is now Governors Trail Road in 1916-1917, hiring New York architect Oswald Hering to design a French Renaissance house drawing on the Petit Trianon at Versailles. Cox used Trailsend as his base while serving as governor and, in 1920, while running for president with his young running mate, Franklin D. Roosevelt; Roosevelt returned to visit Cox at Trailsend as sitting president on his last trip to the Dayton area, in 1940. The house and grounds, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, sit in a part of Van Buren Township that stayed a scatter of large estates for industrialists and politicians for decades before Kettering incorporated around them.
